Warmouth - Learn some tips and info to help you catch more fish

Warmouth are a species of Sunfish, like the pumpkinseed, red breasted, and others, as their name implies they are quite the little warriors, like their cousins the bluegill, they often fight for pleasure, and they have a mouth that is larger then other sunfish. Warmouth are usually brownish-green, to olive-green in color, changing a little as water conditions change.

Most fishermen place the warmouth on their list of nuisance fish, but there are other anglers who like catching them for fun, and still others who like catching the larger ones for food, being that they are quite boney, anglers prefer the larger ones, to fillet.

Depending upon where you live, water temperature and other such conditions, warmouth tend to spawn from mid spring to early summer. Warmouth survive well in ponds, lakes, streams and rivers. When fishing for them, keep in mind that they tend to stay near debris and other shelter, such as fallen trees, submerged logs and stumps, thick weeds and other such cover.

Also, they find their food mostly by seeing it, so use bait that is live. They love eating crayfish, worms, minnows, crickets and small grasshoppers. They can be caught using many of the common small panfish lures, such as; spinners, poppers, flies and others.
