Washington Redskins Tickets - Haynesworth Causing Drama As Team Makes New Start

The 2010 NFL season will be an exciting one for anyone following the Washington Redskins

. The team has worked hard to nab many new names, perhaps the biggest of which is new head coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan spent last season out of the league after spending the bulk of his career with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos let him go after an especially disappointing season. Nearly every team in the league would have jumped at the chance to have Shanahan at the help, and in the end it was the Redskins who ended up winning the fight.

Shanahan is a coach who commands respect without the emotional outbursts that characterize the style of other head coaches. Players, fans and even outsiders tend to respect him, and it means something when he decides to express his opinion.

Enter defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth was a star with the Tennessee Titans through the 2008 season. During the 2009 offseason, the Redskins landed the star by offering him a seven-year deal worth a staggering $100 million. He didn't the high expectations set upon him in 2009, playing in 12 games and tallying 37 tackles, four sacks and five passes defended.

Since adding Shanahan, the team has decided to switch to a 3-4 defense, irking Haynesworth, who apparently doesn't see himself excelling in the new scheme. He wanted out, but he also didn't want to play by the parameters put in front of him by the Redskins. Shanahan spoke about those parameters in a press conference, and they involved Haynesworth choosing a team before April 1, when the team was set to owe him a $21 million bonus. Haynesworth didn't choose a team by April 1, and Shanahan made it clear that meant he would be in Washington for 2010. Haynesworth responded by skipping a mandatory mini-camp.

In the press conference about the Haynesworth situation, Shanahan made it clear that Haynesworth was expected to play any position asked of him by the Redskins and work hard to excel. Shanahan expressed his sentiments by saying he was disappointed with Haynesworth. Shanahan also insisted, though, that the team wasn't hung up on Haynesworth, and his absence hasn't been a distraction to the rest of the team.

Even without Haynesworth, the Redskins have quite the season to look forward to in 2010. The team has a proven quarterback at the helm in Donovan McNabb. McNabb was picked up from the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade, and the team will only benefit from the addition of a veteran Pro Bowler like McNabb.

The team also added young talent by making strategic selections in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Redskins used their first round pick on Oklahoma offensive tackle Trent Williams. They also added LSU linebacker Perry Riley (Round Four), Louisiana Tech tight end Dennis Morris (Round Six), UCLA wide receiver Terrence Austin (Round Seven), New Mexico center Erik Cook (Round Seven) and West Virginia offensive tackle Selvish Capers (Round Seven).
