Waterlase Technology - Another Step Closer to Patient Comfort

What do patients think of when they think of a visit to the dentist

? Usually it's the dreaded whirr of the dentist's drill working away inside our mouth, which can make us feel terrified, helpless, or vulnerable. Will it be painful? What if the Novocain wears off too soon? Rational and irrational thoughts alike make us suffer from dental anxiety. But dental visits do not have to be terrifying anymore, thanks to new developments in dental technology like waterlase dentistry.

How it works:

Waterlase drills use laser and a gentle spray of water. As a result they help dentists perform restorations without generating heat, vibration and pressure generally associated with the conventional dental drill. For many procedures, it is possible to use less anesthetic; and in some cases, no anesthetic at all.

Advantages of waterlase dentistry:

There are many advantages to using waterlase technology:

Noise and vibration: Although there may be a popping sound, there is no vibration whatsoever when using this technology. This is in contrast to the high pitched sound and strong vibrations that can be un-nerving.

Cutting effects are minimally invasive when using waterlase drills. It also preserves tooth structure compared to the invasive, conventional drills that tend to remove more tooth structure.

Preparation time for using the conventional drill and the waterlase drill are the same, in case you are concerned about timing and delays. Both methods take around 30-60 seconds for preparing a class II cavity.

Patient comfort is maximized due to minimal anesthesia. By contrast, the conventional method requires anesthesia in almost all cases. Early research suggests that some patients do not require anesthesia under the waterlase technology.

Patient acceptance under this technology is reported to be relatively high, according to companies marketing waterlase technology. They attribute high acceptance levels to the convenience of avoiding injections (for anesthesia), lack of vibration and numb lips.

Would waterlase technology make the dentist visits feel more welcoming? Maybe not, but it will certainly make visits less scary, and that is a step in the right direction.
