Ways to Use a Canopy to Shade Your Investments

Why leave a car outdoors and exposed to the elements when you can cover it up with a canopy

? Exposure to UV rays and water, over time, can wear away at the appearance of a vehicle. UV rays, for example, will fade and crack the appearance of a vehicle, such as a boat or RV, when left continuously exposed, while water may build up on the surface of a vehicle and cause mildew or mold to form. Why take a risk? A portable shelter, such as a canopy, will keep the vehicle protected and shaded from these elements.

A canopy for protecting a vehicle and other investments is made from a galvanized steel frame and a heavy-duty polyethylene top. The polyethylene is treated to be UV resistant, waterproof, mildew resistant, and rot proof and, in some cases, may be fire retardant according to CPAI 84 section 6 requirements. Some of these structures have a valance style, in which the polyethylene top only has a slight overhang and the body of the shelter is open. This format is more common for carport-style canopies. Enclosed canopies, on the other hand, have a polyethylene top and walls and are ideal for long-term storage of vehicles and other investments.

Aside from storing vehicles, canopies have several other temporary uses. Called party or pop-up canopies, these shelters are made from a powder-coated steel frame and polyester top treated to be UV resistant and waterproof. Being lightweight is an advantage for pop-up canopies, as they can be taken to several locations. At home, they're used for shade and temporary shelter for outdoor parties, and the shelter can be folded up, placed in a car, and taken to the beach, a trade show, or a flea market for the same purpose. This type of canopy folds out in minutes and just needs anchors to be held in place.

Sheltering is key when a canopy is being used. Aside from the composition of the structure, the frame needs to be anchored in order for the shelter to fully protect the investment. For valance, enclosed, and carport-style canopies, this may be through setting the legs of the shelter in concrete and then adding the shelter to the ground. If you don't want the shelter to be permanent, anchors and foot pads will keep the shelter in place and can be removed at a later date. Temporary canopies, additionally, simply need to be held in place with tent stakes in order to stay in place.
