We Can Use Viral Marketing To Spread The News About God
Genesis 24:35-36 captures the words of Abraham's servant as he speaks to Rebekah's brother
, Laban. Abraham's servant prayed to God for guidance in finding a wife for Abraham's son, Isaac. Shortly thereafter, he met Rebekah at the town well.
In following with the local custom, Abraham's servant then went back to Rebekah's home to seek the approval and permission of Rebekah's father, Bethuel, and brother.
The men knew who Abraham was. He used to live in the area. In fact, Bethuel, Rebekah's father, is Abraham's nephew.
However, Abraham's servant gave the men an update on Abraham and how his life had changed since he moved away. The words of these verses reminded me of just how careful we must be with how we live our lives because people are watching us.
In fact, we can use this to our advantage. In an age where cell phones, the internet, and social media websites run rampant, we have become used to the fast-paced way of spreading the word about any and every thing. Similarly, we can use our lives to become viral marketers for our God.
So, how would a viral marketing campaign for God work?
Identify the benefits
The first step in getting a viral marketing campaign started is having someone identify a benefit, something that other people would want to have.
We can see in the words of Abraham's servant that Abraham had lots of benefits. He had been blessed "abundantly." He was "wealthy." He had servants, animals, and precious metals. He was even blessed to have a son with his wife in their old age.
We, too, have been blessed in life, and others have noticed the benefits in our lives.
Expose the source
As with any new product or service that we get excited about, we want to talk about it. We want to tell everyone how much better our lives have been as a result of this new discovery.
We should get that way about our God, too. In these verses, Abraham's servant is well aware of how Abraham came to have all of these great blessings. Abraham told his servants that God was the source. He didn't misrepresent the source of any of his wealth. As the last sentence reads, "He has given him everything he owns."
When people approach us about the source of our abundant blessings, to whom do we give the credit? Are we quick to tell others about how much God is doing for us? Or do we forget the true source and think we had something to do with it?
Let the word spread
Once we start telling people, it is possible that at least one person will get as excited about God as we are and the word will start to spread like a virus. In just a short time, many people can learn about God's love for us.
Moving forward, let's remember that our friends deserve to hear more from us than just where the best sales are. We should call to talk about something other than the juicy gossip someone wanted to share with us. Let's make sure that people everywhere know the good works that God is performing in our lives.
