Weapons Training

If you own a handgun, pepper spray, taser, stun gun or any other weapon for your personal safety it is important to train with that weapon as much as you possibly can. It doesn't matter if you keep it at home, in your vehicle, or on your body. Training prepares both your muscle memory as well as your mentality when it comes to using that weapon under stressful conditions. You must understand thatthe average citizen doesn't face dangerous situations on a daily or evena monthlybasis. Therefore their reaction when faced with such a situation, isn't always a positive one.

So how do we train our mind and body? There are several ways to go about getting mentally and physically prepared. If you have friends or family who can help you create real life situations such as home invasions, robberies, assaults or car jackings then you're ahead of the "ball game". They can help simulate someone kicking in your front door or climbing through your window, holding up a convenience store or approaching you as you walk to your car. These types of scenarios help to increase your heart rate as in real life. And the best part is you get to make mistakes and see what works and what doesn't.

Eventually your mind begins to process when something bad is about to happen. And instead of freezing up or running, you begin to develope a reactive mindset. You instinctively react based on the training you have had. Trust me its a reaction, you don't even think about it. And if you have taken your training seriously, you will respond with what you need to do in order to keep yourself or others out of harm. No matter what personal protection weapon you chose to have you must train with that weapon. Get a feel for where is the best place to carry it that allows you to access it with the least amount of effort. Find out how accurately you can use it under stressful conditions.

When a criminal is about to commit a crime, he/she already has a plan of action and they are mentally prepared to carry out that crime. What they usually aren't prepared for is their victimto fightback. This is why most crimes are aborted when someone attacks the attacker. The criminal doesn't have a mindset or plan of action to react to the reverse combat against them. They automatically assume people are going to cower at their demands without confrontation. So when you throw that monkey wrench in the mix, they get confused and don't know what to do. (Most of the time)

In the police academy the instructors use to teach us to play the "what if" game to help us get mentally prepared for worse case scenarios. They told us where ever you are, what ever you are doing ask yourself "what if" someone pulled a gun as I'm walking up to a car during a traffic stop? What if I'm off duty and someone robs a resturuant I'm dining in? What if someone throws a punch while I'm inquiring why they are behind a building at night? You can create hundreds of"what if" situations. The idea is to figure out what kind of options are available when reacting. Some would be to take cover, others would be to react with deadly or non deadly force. This is a great way to get your mind processing different ways to get out of dangerous situations.

Of course ascivilians your "what if" situations could be more like; what if someone kicks in my front door as I'm watching T.V.? What if someone is following me as I'm walking to my car? What if someone pulls a knife and demands money? If you haven't trained or even thought aboutwhat you would say or do, thenstart training now. The consequences of freezing up and not knowing what to do could be fatal!
