Weekly Poems from Poems for Free: Proverbs on Selfishness and Selflessness and More

SELFISHNESS AND SELFLESSNESS

1. The last vestige of egotism is the desire to sacrifice oneself for others.

2. The reward for self-sacrifice is self-adulation.

3. The desire to "make a difference" is a desire for personal significance, the cause of much evil, error, and pain.

4. True selflessness requires one to relinquish the desire for power.

5. The motivations for action ought always to be joy and love.

NOW THAT YOU ARE TWENTY-ONE

Now that you are twenty-one, you can begin to:

* Produce more than you consume;

* Accumulate mistakes that are 100% your own;

* Take responsibility for the next four or five decades of human history;

* Realize as you learn more and more that you know less and less;

* Define God for yourself;

* Furnish your home with any values you wish;

* Compose the symphony of your life on themes contained in the opening Andante;

* Wonder how you could be so old and have accomplished so little.

YOUR HEART IS JUST AS LOVELY AS YOUR FACE

Your heart is just as lovely as your face.

I can't believe you ever could love me.

Gifted with a more than human grace,

You're meant for some more noble destiny.

I watch you from the sidelines in a dream

That never can come true. Yet nonetheless,

My heart is happier than it might seem:

I shiver in the warmth of your caress.

I may not be the mirror for your eyes,

But fortune has been decent, on the whole.

I cannot know your heart or hear your cries,

But love for you illuminates my soul.

My looks have made me shy, so please take this

As it is meant: an unrequited kiss.

HOW CAN WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES

How can we believe in miracles

After two millennia of none?

No intervention spared the Jews of Sorrow;

Under no temple roofs were wonders done.

Knowing who provided all those ashes,

Knowing well the secret of that flame,

As we light the candles of remembrance,

How can we bear to call upon your name?

THANK YOU FOR THE GIFT OF LIFE

Thank you for the gift of life,

For letting me be me,

For all that I can know by words

And all that I can see,

For all the music I can hear

And all the songs I sing,

For all the joy that comes to me

And all the joy I bring,

For all the food that I can taste

And all the sweet scents smell,

For all the loved ones I can touch,

Who love and wish me well,

For all the beauty of the world,

Ever fresh and new,

I don't know whom else I can thank,

And so I'm thanking you.

ELISHA AND TIMMY HAVE BEEN FIVE YEARS TOGETHER

Elisha and Timmy have been five years together.

Love came to them young, and still it stays.

In their hearts they feel that it's forever,

Sweet love walking with them all their days.

However much life crashes hard around them,

All they have to do is turn within.

A gentle peace, serene and clear, surrounds them,

Nor need they strive some stranger's eye to win.

Despite this joy, they know there's some rough sailing

To come between reality and dream.

In choosing young, they've laid some grounds for failing:

More doubt and wonder than it first might seem.

May their love take them through these shoals of night.

Years on years will prove young love was right.

THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE YOU'VE SHOWN OUR CHILD

Thank you for the love you've shown our child,

However little we two might have shared.

A baby has the right to be adored,

No matter whether we are well prepared,

Knowing without knowing we have smiled.

You're neither walking off nor running scared,

Opening your heart to be beguiled,

Understanding the immense reward.
