Welcoming a puppy to your home- essential items to ensure an easy transition
When bringing your puppy home for the first time, there are a number of things that you will need to ensure they settle in easily. Even if you want to keep the things you buy down to a bare minimum, there are five things that you will need to get to ensure that your puppy's new life with you is as comfortable as possible.
Firstly you will need some where for your puppy to sleep. Make sure you buy a dog bed big enough for your dog to grow into. Small dog breeds tend to prefer smaller doughnut type beds whilst larger dogs prefer cushion type beds. Buy one that is big enough for the fully grown dog to stretch out on plus 20-30 cm.
Your new dog will need a collar and a lead for taking it for walks. If you cannot commit to regular exercise for your pet then you should seriously consider whether a puppy is the right pet for you. Dogs love and NEED regular walks. With correct training your dog should soon learn to walk well on the lead but if you find they are a bit too boisterous and pull, eventually you can invest in a harness. Ask your vet or local pet supplies shop for their recommendations for your dog breed. To start with though a normal collar should suffice; make sure they are tight enough to not slip over their heads but loose enough to put two fingers underneath and check regularly as they grow.
You will need two bowls, one for water, which should be available 24 hours a day, and the other for food. It is a matter of personal preference and also dependant on your dogs breed as to whether you choose plastic, pottery or metal for your dog.
To start with your dog should have a puppy dog food as they have smaller, more edible pieces. Reputable breeders will supply you with a small amount of the food the puppy has been weaned on but if you want to change the brand you should do so gradually as too quick a change can cause stomach upsets (not pretty in an un-house trained pet!).
Finally, get a few toys for your puppy to play with. Chew toys provide mental stimulation and help to keep your dog's teeth clean. Make sure that you don't select toys that are two small or ones that break easily, you will be amazed at what a puppy can chew through!
Other items you might also consider include dog poo bags for your walks, plenty of newspaper or training pads and pet disinfectant for those unavoidable accidents (N.B. Some trainers recommend that you do not use training pads or newspaper to house train your puppy as it confuses them), child gates to stop your puppy wandering upstairs and a dog crate for security.
Of course there are plenty more things you will need eventually; a trip to a pet supplies shop can give you an idea of what is on offer. These will keep you going for the first few months until you are ready to branch out on your own.
