What About Trane Through The Wall Air Conditioners For Motels

Air conditioning was one of the most important technological developments of the twentieth century

. Trane is a key manufacturer of heating and cooling systems. Following is an overview of Trane through the wall air conditioners.

Most air conditioners use either open or closed evaporation. The open systems are called evaporators and will not be addressed here. The closed systems are called refrigerators. They evaporate a refrigerant fluid in a closed system. This causes it to absorb heat. It is then pumped out of the area being cooled, recompressed to release the heat, and reused.

Trane is a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand and formerly part of American Standard Companies. It is a leading manufacturer of heating and cooling systems. Its products include gas furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, integrated systems, and supporting equipment. It offers both home and commercial lines of equipment.

Trane's marketing is mostly focused on large systems. However, they do sell some smaller ones too. Their Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) would qualify as through the wall air conditioners. One PTAC will cool one, or at most two, rooms. They are designed to be installed through an outside wall. They could be used for hotel guest rooms. A separate unit for each room makes it easier to control by room, and even to turn off in unused rooms.

Some PTACs are actually heat pumps. A heat pump can either heat or cool. It uses the refrigeration process in either case. When heating it brings heat from outdoors into the area to be heated.

PTAC cooling capacities range from 7,000 BTUs up to 15,000 BTUs. They can either have no electric heating or they can have up to 5 kilowatts. Some models operate on 208 volt electricity, others on 265 volts.

The units can be turned on and off remotely. This could be useful in a hotel, where a central location could ensure that only the rooms in use are being heated or cooled. This could save both staff time and utility bills.

Each unit has built in thermostat control capability. They can be used with a wide variety of thermostats. It is possible to program limits for thermostat settings. An optional remote temperature sensor can be placed to give better control over room temperature.

They can be set to dehumidify the air without cooling it. In many circumstances this can give the same comfort level as cooling for less expense. Outside air can be vented in to the room through a filter. This reduces the load of pollen and dust, making the air more pleasant to breath and helping to keep the room from getting dirty. They can be very quiet when the fan is on low.

For greater reliability, the electrical heating automatically backs up the heat pump heating. The PTACs are designed to not all turn on at the same time after a power failure, this preventing power surges.

Due to their efficient and quiet operation, centralized air conditioning and heating are often favored. It is good to remember that less central options have their advantages. In some situations one of the Trane through the wall air conditioners can be a good choice.
