What Ails You Down There: Know Your Nether-regions
There are two main vaginal bacterial infections that cause discomfort and embarrassment for women
. Other vaginal infections exist, but they are often sexually transmitted and not caused by bacteria. Yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are the two most common vaginal bacterial infections, and each is sometimes mistaken for the other because of how similar their symptoms are.
It all starts with Lactobacilli, which are bacteria naturally present in the vagina that work as a protective barrier to keep germs out, and they maintain the acidic level necessary for a healthy vaginal environment. When the number of Lactobacilli are decreased or the vaginal area is exposed to harmful bacteria, this change in the vagina's natural environment leads to vaginal bacterial infections, like yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.
There are many things that can cause an imbalance or decrease in protective ability of the Lactobacilli: from using antibiotics to birth control to tight, unbreathable clothing and fragrances or douches. All of these elements disrupt the natural harmony that your body has established.
Yeast Infections are one of the most common vaginal bacterial infections that doctors and gynecologists diagnosis. Yeast infections occur when yeast cells accumulate and are allowed to overgrow. This overgrowth is commonly associated with antibiotic use, pregnancy and the use of fragranced soaps and sprays. Antibiotics are often a culprit, because they wipe out all the bacteria from your body-bad and good-leaving you susceptible. When the Lactobacilli aren't present to maintain the right acidic balance, yeast cells go unchecked, causing a thick, cottage cheese-like discharge accompanied by vaginal itching.
Bacterial Vaginosis is also caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the body, causing the acidity level to become more alkaline. This vaginal bacterial infection is also common among women who are sexually active, although it's not a sexually transmitted disease. Bacterial Vaginosis is different from a Yeast infection in that the discharge isn't as thick and there is a distinct, fish-like odor that accompanies the discharge. This odor is often most noticeable after having sex.
Vaginal infections can be embarrassing to discuss, but it's important to feel comfortable with your physician or gynecologist. While these vaginal bacterial infections can be treated with over the counter products and natural remedies, it's important to go to your doctor if symptoms persist. There are creams and wipes that can be used for Yeast infections and a variety of herbal remedies that help to regain bacterial balance and eliminate vaginal odor for women suffering from bacterial vaginosis. It's important to know your body, especially your private parts, to remain confident and healthy.
