What Are Some Of Liposuction's Limitations?

Liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) sounds an awful lot like a dream surgery to some people

. You enter overweight, go under the knife and leave slim, trim and sexy. While the surgery can be a great help to a lot of people, it is not quite as simple as the dream picture that a lot of people have. The surgery is not some magical cure that can do anything. It exists in the real world, and like all real world things, it has limitations and drawbacks.

The first major limitation that lipoplasty has is the amount that it can do. A lipectomy removes excess fat from the body by suctioning it out through a special hollow tube called a cannula. Despite the assurances of certain plastic surgeons, there are limits to how much fat any given lipoplasty can remove. The more fat a given liposuction removes, the more invasive and traumatic the surgery will be on the body. It is difficult to give hard and fast rules regarding exactly how much fat can be removed in any given surgery. However, one ballpark figure that some surgeons give is 10 pounds.

The procedure is similarly limited with regard to the number of places it can remove fat from. Every area that is treated needs to be anesthetized, and every area that is treated similarly adds to the trauma of surgery. The surgery is best if it's performed on a relatively small number of areas.

Both of these limitations mean that lipoplasty is not well-suited to extremely overweight or obese people. When people have a significant amount of extra weight, they typically have it all over their body, which makes it difficult to remove it. Although some surgeons perform large volume liposuctions in which they remove large amounts of weight from a number of different body areas, these procedures are much riskier than more cautious and moderate liposuctions. They risk aesthetic problems such as unnatural appearances and more severe complications such as injury or disease.

The surgery similarly is not well-suited for people who could have a hard time healing or who have bleeding disorders such as hemophilia. A number of factors influence a person's ability to heal, including general health, age, chronic sickness, and even things like a smoking habit.
