What Are Some Of The Most Popular Places To Get Liposuction?
There's no denying that liposuction (also called lipoplasty) is big news
. For 12 out of the last 13 years, this procedure has topped the charts as the most popular cosmetic surgery in America. Last year, even during a recession, nearly 350,000 people underwent the procedure. The year before, the numbers were well over 400,000.
The word liposuction means literally the suction of fat. Thus, the surgery removes fat from the body by vacuuming or sucking it out. The procedure is performed through the use of special hollow tubes called cannulas, which are hooked up to a vacuum device. During the surgery, the surgeon numbs the target area, makes a small incision and inserts a cannula. By moving the needle-like cannula back and forth through the target area, the doctor can break up and suction out the unwanted fat.
The surgical cannulas used are very small (frequently measuring only millimeters in diameter). This makes the surgery very adaptable. It can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where there is a store of excess fat.
However, because the human body tends to store fat in certain patterns, there are certain target areas which tend to be the most popular. One of the very most common sites for liposuction is the abdomen. People of both genders frequently experience unwanted fat accumulation on their bellies. Genetically, men are predisposed to store extra fat around their waists, creating large, bulging bellies and prominent love handles. Although women tend not to have quite as strong of a natural inclination to abdominal fat, pregnancy can frequently lead to an accumulation of stomach fat, especially when the baby is delivered via C-section.
Especially among women, the hips, thighs and buttocks are popular places for liposuction. Just as men are predisposed to carry belly fat, many women are genetically predisposed to carry weight around their hips and thighs.
Among both men and women, lipoplasty of the breast is popular. Some women have excessively large breasts which cause very real physical discomfort. The added weight of the breasts can sometimes lead to spine, neck or shoulder problems. Excessive fat storage at the site of the breast is less common in men, but many men find it socially awkward when it does occur. In both men and women, the surgical removal of fat from the breast can help to ease emotional and physical discomfort.
Other popular areas include the arms (mostly among women) and the face (among both genders). In some cases, liposuction can help to trim and slim large and flabby arms. Similarly, when people have problems with double chins or prominent jowls, they frequently turn to lipoplasty.
