What Are The Limitations Of A Hobby Greenhouse?
For most backyard gardeners, a hobby greenhouse is all they will have space for
. A hobby greenhouse will probably have enough room for what most will want to do, but it does come with some limitations.
Size
Your typical hobby greenhouse is big enough to stand and move around in, but it's not gigantic. The peak of the roof is not over 8 feet in most cases, and less is not uncommon. This means you cannot usually grow fruit trees in your greenhouse unless they are a very small variety.
With shelving, the small size is usually quite adequate to the needs of your typical backyard gardener. You can start out a large number of seeds earlier in the season than you could start them otherwise.
Temperature Control
You will need to pay attention to temperature in your greenhouse. In the summer it can get hot enough to cook your plants if you don't vent it well enough. In winter you may need to install a heater to keep things warm enough, depending on the climate of your area.
It is smart to buy a thermometer for your greenhouse and to pay attention to weather forecasts so you are likely to know when you will need to control the temperature.
Your typical hobby greenhouse may need insulation added. You can caulk around the windows and doors to limit any air flow through these areas. You may also need to add plastic sheeting to improve the insulation for the winter.
Durability
Some hobby greenhouses are more durable than others. Pay attention to quality as well as to price when you shop for a greenhouse. You do not want to spend several hundred dollars on something that lasts only a year or two.
You can try out your interest in having a greenhouse by buying a cheap plastic version if you like. These will not last as long as models with polycarbonate windows, but they can help you to decide if you will use one enough for the investment to be worth the money. These are not nearly as well insulated as better polycarbonate greenhouses, but do help a little.
Water
You will need access to water in your greenhouse, since the roof keeps the rain away from your plants. The ability to haul in a hose is quite enough.
Humidity
It can get very humid in a greenhouse. You will want to be certain that your plants can take the humidity. You will also need to watch for algae and fungi that love to grow in humid conditions but aren't welcome in your garden.
Pest Control
While a greenhouse limits how many pests get into your plants, pest control can be more difficult. Even if you're willing to spray chemicals, it's a small area in which to be working with them, and you do not want to inhale the spray of your typical pesticide.
