What Brand Or Grade Of Paint Should I Use On My House In Tulsa?
Should I use Stain or Latex/Acrylic When I Paint My House
?
Welcome to the TulsaHousePainter.com's Answers to Frequently Asked Questions. In this article I'll answer the question, "What brand and grade of paint should I use on my house?" I'm going to give you the answer to that question.
Picking the Right Paint
As weve covered in our other videos, you should paint your house with an acrylic latex paint. But, there are a lot of those out there and many people wonder how to pick the right one.
As with most things, with Acrylic Latex Paint you get what you pay for. The science of paint chemistry continues to improve the quality, durability, and the ease of application properties of paint. But you will have to pay for these hi-tech features.
Do NOT buy the cheapest paint you can find because it WILL cost you money in the long run. If you were to go to Sherwin-Williams, for example, Typically you will want to select one of the 3 most expensive acrylic latex grades of paint that they offer. And I actually recommend you buy their most expensive paint, which is their Duration brand, because it will save you money in the long run.
Features You Want
So here are some of the features you want in an Acrylic Latex Paint
You want a paint with a very long, or even a life-time warranty because you want it to last for many, many years. I prefer a paint that goes on with only one-coat and is self-priming.
Make sure that the paint you choose is recommended, or approved by the manufacturer for the type of surface you have on the exterior of your home.
And, buy your paint from a reputable store, such as Sherwin Williams, Kelly Moore, Home Depot, Lowes, or Anchor Paint.
Test Before You Commit
Before you make your final selection of paint, you should test the paint on your house.
So go to your paint store and ask them for a sample of each paint you are considering. They will mix up the color or colors you want in small little cans and sell it to you very cheaply as a sample.
Find an inconspicuous place, probably on the back of your home, and paint about a 1 or 2 foot square section with each paint you are considering.
Now the ideal way to do this is to apply the sample on your home in the late fall and then see how it looks in the early spring so it has a chance to go through some weather changes. But at the minimum I think you should let the samples sit for at least 3 months.
Then at the end of the test period, evaluate the smoothness of the paint surface, did it fade, or did it peel or show any other kind of imperfection. Then you should be able to make an educated decision on which paint is the best for your house.
