What Can I Do To Prepare For My Liposuction?

Liposuction is a large and popular market, and it's also a large step in a person's life

. Although it's less invasive and traumatic than many forms of cosmetic surgery, it nonetheless takes a toll on the body. There is a certain amount of trauma involved with any surgery, and a surgery which removes relatively large amounts of body fat requires the body to make certain changes and adapt.

The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, and it usually takes a few hours to perform. During the surgery, the doctor makes one or several incisions in the patient's target area. After making the incisions, the doctor inserts a small hollow needle called a cannula. This cannula is what breaks up the fat in the target area, and it is also what the doctor uses to vacuum the fat out of the body again.

The surgery typically takes somewhere from a few days to a few weeks to recover from, but your recovery will be affected to some degree by the things that you do in the days, weeks and months preceding the procedure. Your doctor will likely give you directions regarding how to prepare for your procedure. You should do your very best to follow these directions, because they will help you to have a healthier, safer and more successful surgery and recovery.

If you smoke, your doctor will probably tell you to quit before your surgery. This is a very important piece of counsel to follow. Smoking can increase your chances of serious complication during your surgery, and it can also interfere with your body's ability to heal. You should similarly obey your doctor's orders when it comes to alcohol consumption. Your doctor may not ask you to stop drinking altogether, but chances are good that he or she will ask you to limit your consumption in the weeks preceding your surgery.

Your doctor may want you to take supplements or vitamins. Many doctors prescribe iron pills or specific multi-vitamins to their patients in the space of time preceding their liposuction. Some others suggest taking specific herbal supplements after the surgery to help reduce swelling. However, you should make sure that you are following your doctor's orders when it comes to your vitamins and supplements. A number of supplements can actually cause harm or increase the chances of complications when it comes to your surgery, so make sure that you ok all of your supplements with your doctor.

Similarly, you should make sure that your doctor knows about all the medications that you are currently taking, both prescription and over the counter. Certain drugs (even very common ones like Aspirin or Advil) have been found to increase the chances of complications or interfere with healing after surgery. You should not take any of the drugs your doctor tells you to avoid within two weeks of your surgery.

Another thing you can do to prepare is to simply increase your own physical health. The healthier your body is, the better it will be able to recover from the trauma of surgery. A healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise and plenty of good, quality sleep will do wonders for you. Additionally, these steps can help you to lose some of the weight that might be impelling you to get the surgery in the first place. The healthier and trimmer you are when you go in for your liposuction, the more likely it is that your surgery will give you the results that you really want.
