What Career Path Should I Take?

A lot of people decide against college since they can't decide on a career path

. Don't get discouraged if this applies to you. This is a tough question that many people battle with. When you are seventeen years old, you can't possibly know all of the career options that are open to you. But that should not stop you from going to college.

You don't have to plan out every detail of your future to be successful. This doesn't mean that you don't have ambition. It may just mean that you had no way to know all of the options that you could take. Picking a major in college is easier with a simple trick. The answer is in your recent past. High School graduates just spent thirteen years attending classes. You know which subjects you loved, and which you hated.

Are you a math or a science person? Did you like to figure out problems at your desk? Did you ace every math test without studying? Did you easily understand the periodic elements in class and love to do experiments? What about reading and writing? Maybe your thing was history, reading, or language class. The point is that you already know what you like to study. This knowing gives you an honest picture of whom you are and who you will become. But this is a very general term. Look at many job titles.

Career Titles Refer to Different Career Paths

Not all job titles are absolute. Different companies may have the same job titles that refer to very different jobs. To the contrary, the same job can have different job titles at other companies. Think about the job of a marketing manager, for example. At company "A", which is a mid-sized company, this person is involved with all of the promotional items, the sales staff and the the brand. In company 'B', a large multi-national firm, this person may run a department with a small staff who helps promote the company. The person at company "C" basically helps the owner and does sales. Yet all three hold the title of marketing manager.

As shown above, job titles just act as a mere label. Don't focus on job titles when choosing a career path. Instead, you should think about your preferred atmosphere and what you enjoy doing. Some people have to be outside for at least part of the day or they get the jitters. Being at a quiet desk makes other people happy.

Your atmosphere is just as important as what you are doing. But don't make firm decisions now. College is a great opportunity to explore your options. Another thing to remember about job titles is that they are not absolute. As technology changes, so will those options. While some jobs emerge, others will become obsolete.
