Have you ever experienced the horrifying effects of an earthquake

, a volcano, tornadoes, or a hurricane? Depending on where you live, it could be a common thing. You may have suffered the losses of a broken family, a tortured home, and a wiped out population. You may have experienced the heart of a storm, getting hit with flying bar stools, getting swept under water, sitting in basements hoping for the best. This is not fun day off of school, it's a disaster. One way that weather specialists keep track of dangerous natural disasters is by understanding why they form.

Here are some of the main causes of an earthquake and other random facts about this natural disaster. Earthquakes can easily be triggered by vast plates, or rocks within Earth that suddenly break or shift under stress. This sends shock waves rippling through the grounds. Most earthquakes occur along the fractures of the Earths crust, these are called faults Most faults different in size, some are only a few inches long, while some stretch for hundreds of miles. Faults can be either vertical, horizontal, or located on an angle. Sudden movement along the fault which causes the ground to shake When stress builds up far from the plate edges, the crust of the Earth is squeezed or stretched until it rips, creating an intraplate quake The waves of an earthquake is measured using sensitive instrument known as seismographs Based on the power of its seismic waves, earthquakes are rated on the Richter scale Thousands of quakes occur every day around the world, most of them however are much too weak to even be felt Annually, about 10,000 people lose their lives as the result of an earthquake.
