What is a panic attack? A panic attack is a sudden and severe form of an anxiety attack
. Often caught off guard, panic attack disorder patients never know when and where it will attack. This disorder has claimed popularity in the medical world because it is affecting more and more lives all over the world every day. In this article, I will try to answer common questions about the disorder such as what causes panic attacks or what are their cures.
What causes panic attacks? There are numerous possible answers to that question, however, their most common denominator is anxiety. Someone who is exposed to high levels of anxiety over a period of time is bound to have a panic attack.
Heredity and personality are two other things that can cause a panic attack. There are already a lot of studies that can prove the connection between genetics and panic attacks, however, its exact pathopyhsiology in relation to heredity is still indefinite. Again, this is still a theory and not a medical law.
Moreover, your personality can dictate your likelihood to develop a panic attack. Does it sound unbelievable? Have you ever tried being angry with no means to release it? Try doing that even just for a day and you will find yourself being panicky about little things. Same is true with people whose personality do not allow them to express their emotions.
Now that we know the causes, we will discuss the symptoms. What do you notice when you are having a panic attack? The first two things that change significantly are your heartbeat and breathing. Your heart would beat faster than usual, so fast it will begin to hurt. On the other hand, your breathing becomes erratic and your chest will tighten.
Although those two are the most commonly observed symptoms of a panic attack, there are some other things that are also evident during an attack. Some of these are light-headedness, vomiting, and sweating. Others faint during a panic attack but that is only because they hyperventilate.
The concept of panic attack is bound to scare anyone who learns about it. In reality, there is no need for such a reaction because there are many treatments that were developed to cure panic attack. One of these is panic cognitive behavioural therapy. With this therapy, you will learn the pattern of behaviour that led to your disorder.
Many different facts and opinion about panic attack are posted through the Internet. Some are meant to inform you, while others are there to comfort. Whatever happens though, for as long as there is one person suffering from panic attack, people will not stop helping in our own little way.
