. With such a broad variety of different cameras out there, you're probably wondering: How the heck am I going to choose? Well, as I've said before, it seems difficult in the first place but once you have some guidelines to grab on, it becomes a lot easier. So let's begin.
First of all, you need to decide what type of camera you intend to buy and what you'll use it for. Basically, there are compact digital cameras and more advanced ones such as DSLR. Compact digital cameras are lightweight, small, portable. They can easily fit into your pocket and be carried along all the time. They make quite high quality photos and are very suitable for everyday use like parties or taking photos of family members or friends.
However, for taking more professional-looking images, you should look for a more advanced digital camera. Those are usually capable of taking extremely high quality photos and videos. However, they weigh a lot more and their price is far higher. So if you're not considering selling your photos to some local newspaper publisher or something like that, it's best that you go for a compact one.
So, once you've decided what digital camera to buy (compact or advanced), you now have to decide what attributes are the most important to you. I personally, point out the following:
.Resolution. Some people claim that resolution is not important at all and that the number of megapixels is just a trick used by manufacturers to attract more customers. Well, to some extent, they're true. 14 MP may not necessarily mean that the camera will take higher quality photos than the one with only 10 MP. I agree on that but I don't think that ignoring megapixels completely is a good idea. You can say whatever you want but if we take 2 cameras which are completely identical in all aspects but resolution, it's natural that the one with more MP's will take higher quality pictures than the other one. It's just the way it is.
.Battery life. The more photos or videos you can shoot with a fully charged battery, the better it is. If you travell a lot and intend to take your camera with you, it's best to look for a one that would allow you to take at least 700 photos.
.Optical zoom. There are always situations when you want to take a great photo but you can't get close enough. That's when optical zoom comes into help. How much of it you should look for, once again depends on your needs. For taking photos in parties, for instance, 5x optical zoom is enough but for shooting wildlife 10x is the bottom line.
.Operating speed. Especially shutter speed. The slower the shutter is, the higher the lag between the press of a button and taking a photo there will be. So if the shutter speed is only 1sec., for example, this means that the image will only be taken a second after the press of the button. In such a long space of time, the "target" will be long gone and the precious moment lost forever. Therefore, it's advisable to look for a faster camera, usually the one with 0.2-0.3 shutter lag.
.Size and weight. Although this one is probably less important than the others, it is still good to take this factor into account when you're considering what digital camera to buy. Again, if you're a keen trveller, a light one is more suitable. Complex DSLR's aren't really comfortable to carry along.
