What Do Forensic Psychology Schools Teach?

. Many popular shows today use forensic science as a major element, and most of those shows have someone who fills the role of the forensic psychologist. If you are basing your opinion of the job of a forensic psychologist off what you see on television and read in novels, then you arent getting the entire story. These specialists do far more than just profile criminals. In fact, the real life work of someone with a forensic psychology degree can be far more interesting than fiction in many cases. Digging into the minds or real criminals is certainly more intriguing.

Before you start looking up forensic psychology schools to attend based on your assumption of what these psychologists do, it is a good idea to learn about the reality of their lives. Forensic psychologists can work in a number of different settings, and they will have different roles in those settings. Here are some examples.

In the courts, someone with a forensic psychology degree can work evaluating and interviewing people who are going to stand trial. The psychologist will be able to determine whether the person is capable of standing trial or if they have a reduced mental capacity and standing trial wouldnt be fair. They can also work with victims to help them overcome and cope with their situations, so that they too can go on trial and face their attackers.

Some will choose to go into the corrections system after they have their forensic psychology degree. They will work with prisoners in the system to help them with rehabilitation. They may also provide evaluations to determine the possibility of recidivism for those who are coming up for parole.


Other forensic psychologists may take a role closer to law enforcement. They can work with evidence collected at crime scenes to come up with profiles that the police will be able to use. In addition, they could work evaluating police recruits to ensure that they have what it takes to become officers.

When you go to your forensic psychology schools, they will begin to teach you all that you need to know to develop the skills that you will take into the workforce. Once you have your bachelors degree, you will be able to continue with your education and receive you masters degree and your doctorate, giving you even more insight.
