What Does The Death Of Anwar Al-awlaki Mean For Al-qaeda

The latest blow to al-Qaeda has been the recent death of Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen

. Mr. Awlaki was taken out by a US drone in conjunction with a jet airplane. The mission was probably executed by using the drone to fire one or more missiles into a convoy which he was a part of and the jet to fire either air to ground missiles or to drop laser guided bombs onto the target.

The fact that the United States has released his name means that they are sure about his identity. Normally in this type of mission Special Operations troops will go in and collect either DNA or the body of the target so that a positive identification can be made. I am pretty sure that happened in this case, otherwise the United States would hesitate to make such an affirmative identification.

This US success follows hard on the heels of the Operation which took out Osama bin Laden. It is another stunning success of US intelligence in a very short period of time.

The US has engaged in a campaign to wipe out the leadership of al-Qaeda. The strategy is that if you decapitate the organization you will basically keep it off balance and thus render it powerless. The rank and file members would probably lose their motivation without the charismatic leaders who are so adept at inspiring them to want to risk their own lives for the cause of the organization. A leaderless organization loses its effectiveness also because its purpose begins to fade with time. Al Qaeda is such a large organization that it needs leaders who are effective at all levels.

Anwar al-Awlaki was instrumental in rallying the troops of al-Qaeda to its cause. He is believed to be directly responsible in several terror attacks within the United States itself. He was a major concern to the US government because he was attempting to rally potential terrorists in the United States to conduct random attacks. This is the hardest type or terrorism to prevent because it is planned, and executed within our borders therefore US intelligence and law enforcement has a difficult time sniffing it out. This is the reason that it was so critical to the United States government to insure that Mr Awlaki was eliminated.

The United States also could not afford to allow al-Qaeda to gain a foothold in Yemen because the logistics of chasing them around the world and attempting to fight them is too much. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have all but drained the budget of the United States and are a major cause of the monentary crisis that it is in now. Al-Qaeda was moving into Yemen because of the pressure that the US has been exerting in Afghanistan and Iraq. The United States cant continue to fight al-Qaeda at the current pace because the stress on manpower and equipment is just too much.

The United States had to modify its strategy into one of using technology and Special Operations Troops to attack al-Qaeda because it just would not have worked any other way. They have done an excellent job of adapting to the situation and using their superior technology to their advantage.

I dont see where al-Qaeda can last very long as an official terror organization. The lopping off of its leaders has had to keep them on their heels and in turmoil. As long as the US can continue to kill off its leaders they will not be able to mount any type of effective campaign. I expect that the best effort that we will see from them in the future will be sporadic uncoordinated actions. The only way that they will be able to survive is to develop tactics to counter the US technological advantage. They have given this their best effort and have not succeeded so I dont see how they will be able to survive. Military Ring Express
