What Everyone Needs to Know About Air Conditioner Ratings and Efficiency
British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the total energy needed to raise or lower one gallon
of water one degree per hour, and a rating generally found on Bronx air conditioners.
When air conditioners are rated, they are generally rated by the BTUs in the thousands. Residential units usually carry a rating of 24,000 BTUs or some such number.
Air conditioning units also use a tonnage rating. There are generally 12,000 BTUs per ton. Therefore, if a system's rating is 24,000 BTUs, it is a 2-ton unit.
SEER is another rating you may see on
Bronx air conditioners. This stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, and the higher the number the greater the unit's efficiency. The greater the efficiency of a unit, the less energy it will require.
For example, if you air conditioning unit is rate 10, it will use less electricity to power than a system rated at an 8. This mean it will cost less to operate while getting the same amount of cooling. This sounds great in theory, and it would seem a good idea to buy system rated 10 or higher, but you also have to take into consideration how much you use the air conditioner. The longer the unit runs the more electricity it uses, so too small of a unit that runs continually uses far more energy than a larger unit that runs a shorter amount of time.
If you use it continuously, a higher-rated system will cost less to operate in the end. However, the upfront cost is generally higher priced than a system with a lower rating. If you use it a great deal, you will get you money back within the first few years.
Professionals recommend buying an air-conditioning system with a SEER rating of eight or higher with a 5-year or better warranty. Like with any major purchase, a warranty guarantees you will be covered in case of any unforeseen malfunctions, and saves you from sweltering in the summer heat.
