What Is Acne? And How Do I Get Rid Of It?

Acne ranges from the occasional blemish here and there to severe

, continuous breakouts. Knowing causes of acne breakouts can help you determine the best course of action to clear it up and prevent it from returning.

First, let me just say that 85% of people thirteen and older (yes, even adults) experience some form of acne. As normal as it is, though, it can still be embarrassing. So what causes this embarrassing condition?

Basically, the root cause is a clogging of your hair follicle pores. This can occur either because your skin is producing too much natural oil, which clogs the pore, or by a piece of dirt, dead skin, make-up, or even bacteria, getting trapped inside the pore.

Bacteria is all over the place and lives in and on our bodies as well. Some kinds of bacteria live off the oils of our skin. When our bodies accumulate too much of this type of bacteria, it is not uncommon for them to actually clog our oil-producing pores. An acne cream or pill that acts as an anti-bacterial to these types is your best bet for this condition.

Hormones can also contribute to the problem. If your hormone levels are elevated or fluctuating, as occurs during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, this can trigger an increase in the production of your skin's natural oils.

Heredity and medical products can also play a part in acne. If your parents experienced acne, your body is more likely to behave and react in the same way. Your body may also be reacting to a certain type of medicine.

Foods can contribute to acne only insofar as certain foods may cause your body to produce more oils.

So what can you do to get rid of acne? Here are some treatment options:

For less severe cases of acne, using an acne facial cleanser and an over-the-counter topical cream should clear most of it up. These will rinse away and dry up excess oil while also killing facial bacteria. Don't use an oily face lotion, but look for a non-oily face moisturizer.

If you are experiencing a more serious case of acne, your doctor may suggest one of the following:

A prescription facial cream - these are basically a stronger form of the over-the-counter creams

An oral medication - regulates hormone levels and kills bacteria, examples include birth control pills and Accutane

Light Therapy - kills bacteria via certain wavelengths and smoothes your skin from scars

Laser Therapy - damages oil glands in order to halt their production of excess oils
