What Is Lining Wallpaper And How Do You Hang It ?

Lining paper is a wallpaper that you can hang below another wallpaper to cover a surface that is either uneven cracked or rough in texture

. It is relatively inexpensive and greatly improves the look of the look of your finished look. It can also be very useful to prepare a wall before emulsion painting. Lining wallpaper provides a strong flat base for new or old plaster. It is made from paper pulp and offers a durable fibre grain and tensile strength.

Lining wallpaper comes in various grades of thickness : 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1700 and 2000 grades and as expected the thickest grade of wallpaper is for the roughest surfaces.

The heavier grades are for use as follows :

1200 Grade Heavyweight Lining Wallpaper: Is for use on new or old plaster . It can be used on walls and ceilings and used on moderately rough surfaces (wallpaper weight: 170g per square meter).

1400 Grade Heavyweight Lining Wallpaper: Is for use on new or old plastered walls and ceilings. It is for use on rough surfaces (wallpaper weight: 190g per square meter).

1700 Grade Ultra Heavyweight Lining Wall Paper : Is for use on new or old plastered walls and ceilings. It is for use on rough surfaces (wallpaper weight: 220g per square meter).

2000 Grade Heaviest Lining Wall Paper. Is for use on new or old plastered walls and ceilings. It is the heaviest grade available and is for use on the roughest surfaces.

Prepare the Wall Surface

It is important to prepare the wall as best as possible before hanging the lining paper. This will improve the appearance of the finished effect and give the wallpaper the best surface to adhere to. Rub down well with a heavy duty sandpaper. Dust the surface down with a soft brush. Fill all cracks with a good quality filler and when the filler is dry sand again with a lighter grade sand paper to eliminate any ridges. In a bucket mix a thin paste solution and cover the whole area to be papered. This will allow the lining paper to adhere to the wall better and stop the pasted paper from absorbing too quickly into the plaster. Allow time to dry (about 1 hour)

How to hang Lining Paper ?

Wallpaper can be hung horizontally or vertically although hung either way care must be taken, even though there is no pattern, to match the seams edge to edge. Care must be taken also to not over lap the seams as this will show through the top paper.

When you have measured the distance to cover, either horizontally or vertically, cut the wallpaper into strips to cover the area required. Lay each individual strip in turn on the paste table and cover with paste thoroughly being careful to cover right to the edges.

Fold the pasted strip so that there are no exposed pasted areas and put aside for 5 - 6 mins.

When the paste is thoroughly absorbed into the lining paper offer the piece up to the wall. If hanging vertically working away from the brightest light source, start at the position closest to the ceiling. Unfurl the lining paper and smooth out over the surface making sure to press out all air and excess paste.

When applying the next strip make sure the edge is positioned right to the edge of the previous strip.

When the wall paper is dry, if any areas have been accidentally overlapped you can sand the raised area with a light grade sand paper. If there are any edges that have not butted up to each other, the gap can be filled with filler and once again sanded flat.Woodchip wallpaper (or ingrain wallpaper) is a cheap way to cover a plastered surface, especially if the surface is uneven or rough.
