What Is The Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register replaced the CORGI (Council for Registered Gas Installers) gas register in Great Britain on April 1st 2009

.

Basically it is the only official gas registration body for Great Britain including the Isle of Man. It was appointed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with the intention to protect families and properties from dangerous gas works. All of the gas engineers that are legally able to perform gas work on boilers, ovens, fires and any other gas appliances are on this list. So its all good!

In 2006 the HSE decided to review and modernise the scheme to bring added benefits to customers and gas engineers. The main improvement of the scheme was a clearer focus on gas safety and simplifying the registration and competences requirements for gas engineers obviously without compromising on the safety and service standards.

When you have gas works carried out in your home it is important it is carried out properly, safely and legally. Fitted incorrectly or badly repaired, gas appliances are a major cause of lethal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Even poorly maintained appliances can lead to gas leaks and even explosions! So anyone working on the gas works in your house needs to be on the Gas Safe Register.

You can and should report any bad gas work to the Gas Safe Resister which can be found in Google searching for those words. To find a Gas Safe registered engineer you could also check the gas safe register. Many boiler installation, gas companies will have the yellow and black logo on their site which is an indication. But it might be worth checking the register out also. Its not always easy to spot a dodgy illegal gas fitter compared to a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. You will know if a plumber comes to your house is registered as he must carry and ID card that shows the type of work they are registered to do.

So thats it really, pretty serious stuff. Its all to do with health and safety and ensuring any gas work is done safely giving us peace of mind. Never let anyone who isnt on this register near your home, or your home and family could be at risk from serious gas poisoning explosions and fires!
