What Is The Use Of Metal Spray And Thermal Spray?

Thermal spray is a process of applying metallic and non metallic coatings on to a

surface through a variety of procedures such as flames spray, electric arc spray or plasma arc spray. Such process is conducted to add a layer of material onto a surface to bring significant changes into its properties such as making it hard and durable. Such coatings usually include metals, alloys, ceramics, plastics and composites. These coatings are usually provided in form of wire or powder and are then heated to a molten or semi molten state and is followed by combustion or electrical arc discharge used for energy and the accumulation of particles result into formation of coatings.

Characteristics of thermal spraying

Thermal spraying can use a wide variety of materials to produce coatings over a surface. It can use almost any material that melts without decomposing.

Thermal spray processes are capable of applying coatings to substrates. It can enable materials with high melting points to be applied to final machines parts without change in their properties.

Metal spray and its advantages

When coating material used in thermal spray is metal, it is known as metal spray or metal coating. First of all, metal is brought into molten state by the means of flame. It is sprayed over the surface by using compressed air. Some of the advantages of metal spraying have been discussed below

Metal spraying is significantly used because of its hardness. Such hardness makes it suitable for high wear applications. Hardness usually depends on the many different factors such as kind of metal and metal spray equipments used in the process.

Corrosion resistance is also a crucial characteristic of metal spray. Metal coatings help to protect the substrate from the corrosion. Zinc or aluminium is generally used as basic spray materials for metal coatings. Similarly, metal spray is used on corroded machine tools and steel frames. Other metals typically used in metal spraying include cobalt, nickel, manganese chrome etc.

As the equipments used in metal spraying are portable, they can perform spraying on many different objects irrespective of their size and shapes. It is the reason why it is preferred over other thermal spraying methods.

Thus, in brief metal spraying is a versatile and effective process of protecting various surfaces and objects. From artists wishing to bring metallic effects in their work to industrialists, all can take tremendous advantages of metal spraying.
