What Italy have to do to win the 2010 World cup

In the last 50 years, Italy have there most average team, but if they take the example from

Germany in the last decade they can certainly punch above there own weight.

Paraguay take on World Champions Italy tonight, and South Africa 2010 finally begins.

There are low expectations going into the tournament, and it can't be denied, that this is the least effective group, personnel-wise, of players the Azzurri have gone with to a major tournament for over 50 years.

There are numerous and disturbing flaws in many areas. A lot of the defenders are either past there prime (Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Cannavaro) or have very little experience and have not many caps to their names (Domenico Criscito, Salvatore Bocchetti, Leonardo Bonucci).

There is a lot of center midfielders in mid field, but a dearth of well skilled, creative, on the attack midfielders and wide man who can make the game be stretched, get the opposition to open up and join the middle third to the final third.

And then consider the five attacking choices of Fabio Quagliarella, Antonio Di Natale, Alberto Gilardino, Giampaolo Pazzini and Vincenzo Iaquinta, it's a worry how average they are individually also they are less skilled as front men, and the weakest group Italy have ever gone with to a past World Cup.

The expected beginning XI for the opening tonight against South Americans Paraguay does little to fill you with feelings of confidence: (4-3-3) Iaquinta, Marchisio, Buffon, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Montolivo, Pepe, De Rossi, Bocchetti, Chiellini, Gilardino.

On the up side though you can never for sure, rule out the Italian team - even one as so so as this. The four stars the Azzurri's have on the front of their shirt is not for no reason, and when it really comes down to it, it is very rare that Nazionale fail to show.

An interesting fact is when Italy are written off is when they come out with some of their best. In 1982, with three successive group game draws against, Peru, Poland and rank-outsiders Cameroon, Enzo Bearzot's guys were believed to be hopeless - and then they went on to win the World Cup. In 2006, and the Calciopoli scandal, Marcello Lippi's men were thought of as having absolutely no chance but again fought on to victory. Then there is enough example in 2000, and there were just seconds away for Italy to win the Euros. Many Italians thought, even before the competition started up, that they would be knocked out in the first round.

While the truth is that the 1982, 2000 and 2006 teams were filled with many - world class players - which is not like today's group - Italy still has to dream it can succeed.

For the past decade, Germany have been painfully average, but they still managed to get themselves in the World Cup final in 2002, semis in 2006, and the final of Euro 2008. This editions group cannot be said to be overflowing with quality, but last night's 4-0 domination of Australia once again gave the impression they will go far.

Italy should follow in Germany's example as they start their World Cup defense. The talent pool may be low, but with belief, hard work, using determination, organization and a strong positive attitude this World Cup may not have to be the disaster that has been predicted by the experts.
