. At the same time, the city has a rich cultural heritage that will help you learn about ancient China.
There are many destinations that you can go to during your visit, and the following are just a few of them.
Historical Sites
Shanghai Old Street
This old business street was known as Miaoqian Dajie. Some of the layout and architecture are reminiscent of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is a site of many firsts, including the first tea house, wine shop, jeweler's store, gold shop and bank in the whole of Shanghai. The Old Street has around 225 shops whose designs are carefully made to suit their respective functions.
Qibao Ancient Town
This is the only ancient town that is included within the greater Shanghai, which is more like a living fossil. The history of the town goes back to more than a thousand years, having been built during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126). The town became more prosperous during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
There are two different theories regarding the origin of its name, Qibao, which means seven treasures. One theory says that the name came from the highly regarded Qibao Temple found here, whose reputation spurred growth in the town. The other theory comes from folk tales, which state that there were actually seven treasures found here. They included a bronze bell that dates back to the Ming Dynasty, although folk stories say that it appeared mysteriously, and a Gold Script Lotus Sutra that an imperial concubine wrote in the 10th century, which are the only ones to survive up to the present.
Zhujiajiao Ancient Town
The ancient water town has a history that spans over 1,700 years. The city, which is in the Shanghai suburbs, is shaped like a fan in an area of about 47 square kilometers. This 'Pearl Stream' is the best preserved ancient town in Shanghai. There are four ancient towns in the city.
Among the unique features found in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town are the old bridges. In fact, a visit to this town is considered incomplete if you do not tour the bridges. There are 36 bridges connecting the town, which are made of different materials, ranging from wood to stone.
The biggest stone bridge is the Fangsheng, which means 'setting fish free'. The bridge dates back to 1571. It has a number of interesting features, including a stone tablet (Dragon Gate Stone) with engravings of eight coiling dragons that encircle a shining pearl. The only wooden bridge is the Lang or Huimin Bridge.
