What Must You Wear To A Rad Ballet Classes?
In the UK there are two main ballet organisations offering an examination syllabuses
. Of course you may wish to take ballet classes just for fun and fitness and not to follow an exam curriculum. Then you can wear what you like. But if you want to take examinations and follow a prescribed course which will take you through a 'grade system' leading to exams then you need the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) or ISTD ( Both have uniform requirements, the RAD being the most strict, for you to follow.
The uniform has changed little since I was studying RAD Dance thirty years ago! The RAD is the most important dance academy in the UK and one of the most influential in the world. Most of the top ballet dancers in the UK have been nurtured by RAD teacher and most likely attended the Royal Academy of Dance School from and early age. The RAD has uniform requirements for each grade both for class and for examinations. The grades are; pre-primary, primary and graded one to eight. Each grade has a different uniform requirement. It is up to the teacher to decide how strict to be so check first before you buy. For examinations you will need to but the prescribed exam wear however.
What Do Boys Wear?
Boys in class can wear either a sleeveless cotton Lycra leotard called Rex in black or white or a Romeo short sleeved cotton Lycra leotard in white. For exams they need to wear a white Romeo leotard or a blue or white Ramon cotton Lycra T-shirt. Over the tops they can wear Rory shorts, Reese cycle shorts, Ryan exam shorts or Ryan calf length tights in navy. On the feet white ankle socks and black leather ballet shoes are worn. As they get older and progress through the grades boys can wear Russell cotton Lycra stirrup tights in navy. From grades 1-8 boys need a pair of Oxford character shoes too.
What Do Girls Wear?
Girls have much more choice and the uniform changes from grade to grade. During the Pre- Primary RAD and Primary RAD Grade girls can wear a short sleeved leotard in lavender, pale pink or blue called Victoria with matching voile 'Isabelle' or georgette 'Beatrice' skirt over. There are headbands to match. It is advisable to wear a long sleeved crossover ballet cardigan called either 'Clarisa' or 'Elenor' a matching colour. The look is completed with pink satin or leather ballet shoes and white socks. As they become older, girls have more choice of ballet wear. Grade 1 RAD allows the girls to have a greater choice of leotards in a wider range of colors such as white, pale pink, navy, pale blue or mulberry.
She can continue to wear the short sleeved Victoria leotard or she can wear the more grown-up Catherine sleeveless plain fronted leotard, the Alexandra ruched fronted leotard or the Elizabeth camisole leotard. Regulation footwear is pink ankle socks or pink ballet tights with pink satin ballet shoes or a choice between pink or black leather ballet shoes depending on the teacher. Character work begins in Grade one so you will need a pair of character shoes and a black character skirt with trim that matches the colour or your leotard. During RAD grades three to five girls will usually wear ballet tights and not socks whilst the leotard and skirt requirements are the same.
Girls can wear Cuban heel character shoes if they wish. When girls reach grades six to eight they will need a practice skirt to match their leotard colour. Girls can choose seamed adult dance tights if they wish. All these products and a good deal more from manufacturers such as Capezio, Bloch and Starlight are available from Dance Clothes Uk.com
