What Poker Training Tools Are Right For You?

Poker players face a tough decision

Poker players face a tough decision. Most want to improve, but they feel there are too many options to choose from. You obviously can't try every training aid on the market, or you'll be so broke you won't even be able to play poker.

So of all the things you can choose, what's worth your time and money? Here's a quick guide to the pros and cons of the major categories of poker aides available on the market today.

Poker Books

The advantage of books is how in-depth they are. You get a very dense amount of information on a particular topic (at least with good books) and you get the chance to really sit and absorb, as well as review, material from someone who has obviously put in a good amount of thought on the issue.

The downside is that books are relatively expensive when compared to other formats, and that books are pretty static they can't be updated, generally, and the lag time between writing and publishing means that some of the concepts might be stale before you even crack the cover.

Software

Software is appealing because it seems easy, but the fact of the matter is that any piece of software that tells you they will improve your game immediately or make playign poker easy is probably trying to scam you.

The good pieces of software, such as Hold em Manager, are worth your time. They're not cheap about $100 and they do require a lot of time and patience to set up and delve into. If you have that time and focus, you might want to do some research in this category.

Coaching

Coaching is all the rage these days, but unless you're an already skilled player looking to try some new tactics or iron out some leaks, I'd advise against it. Coaching is generally prohibitively expensive and simply not a good value for newer players.

It sounds very appealing have a pro walk you through the game but the fact of the matter is that most coaches are going to try to teach you their game, which may or may not work for you. You can't blame them they're just teaching what they know works but until you have a solid foundation of your own, there's not a lot of value here.

Training Sites

While these weren't in any particular order, I did wind up saving what I consider to be the best for last. Training sites operate on a principle of scale that means each individual subscriber gets access to far more content per dollar than you would from a book. Training sites also have several of the benefits of an actual coach without the massive cost.

It's not all rosy training sites do have some downsides, and while they're relatively inexpensive, it's still a monthly cost that might not be palatable for some players. Also, different training sites have different focuses, so you need to do you research ahead of time and make sure you pick one that lines up with the games you prefer.

I hope you've found some helpful advice in this quick guide to the best places to spend your hard-earned poker winnings in the hopes of raking in even more profits via the help, advice and insight they provide.
