What Rabat Has To Offer

Rabat is located at the center of the Atlantic coastline in Morocco and is the country's administrative and political capital

. The city was established as an Arab army outpost, which is the source of its name. Ribat basically means military encampment. In 1912, the city was established as a modern capital by the French colonialists. It retained its status upon independence of the country in 1956.

There are numerous tourist attractions in Rabat that make it a great place to visit.

Chellah Necropolis

This is a historic burial site established on the ancient ruins of Sala, which was a roman town. The Merinides showed their honor of Rabat by establishing it as the site of Chellah Necropolis between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The city was referred to as a necropolis until excavations carried out in 1931 revealed the ruins of a Roman town. There is a garden leading to a terrace from where you can have good views of the ruins and Merinide Mosque's minaret, which is decorated with earthenware tiles that have been glazed with polychrome.

Merinide Mosque

The mosque is itself a special attraction. Yacoub El Mansour oversaw its construction in 1196. Its beautiful minaret stands at a height of 44 meters and the Hassan Tower is one of its greatest attractions. There is a mausoleum on the side of the tower where King Mohamed V is buried. This is the same place where the king came to give his thanks to God for the country's independence on his return from exile.

Temara

This is a beach that is some 13 kilometers away from the city center. One of the special attractions of Temara is the natural bathing pool. There is also a zoological garden that is home to some rare animal species.

Sebbat Souk

This is a special market for footwear. You will find many traders here dealing in babuche and leather.

Royal Clube Equestre Riding School

If you would like to try your hand at horseback riding, then this is an ideal destination. You will have the opportunity to train with some of the best thoroughbred horses.

Bou Regreg Dam

Apart from the beauty of the dam itself, you will have the opportunity to enjoy wind surfing, if this is your passion or would like to try it. Alternatively, you may just enjoy a great picnic by the waters of the dam and the Atlantic Ocean.

Oudaias Kasbah

Take some time to explore the interior of this 11th century building. It is the site of a former 'ribat' (fortress) that was meant for the protection of the Oudayas. In addition to exploring the site itself, you will have breathtaking views of the ocean and Sale.

Archeological Museum

The museum was originally established in 1932 and expanded several years later to house archeological findings. You will learn things from prehistoric times among the various sections of the museum.
