What Should I Ask My Doctor At My Liposuction Consultation?

Getting a liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is a big step

. Your surgery will involve a fair amount of money, it will involve some risk to your health, and it will change the way that you look forever.

When you think about it that way, it becomes apparent how important it is to get the right surgeon for your lipoplasty. But how can you find out who's the right surgeon for you?

One of the best times to learn more about whether or not a surgeon is the one you want to operate on you is at your consultation. In addition to learning about the procedure and discussing your medical history, your consultation is a great opportunity to learn things about your surgeon that can help you decide who you should go with.

One thing you will want to find out about is your surgeon's succes rate. Ask to see before and after pictures of their surgeries and see if you tend to like the sorts of results that they produce. However, keep in mind that they may be showing you their best work, and that what you're seeing may not be representative of their work as a whole. Ask how often they experience complications or patient dissatisfaction. Check to se how often they have to perform revisions of their surgeries.

You may not get straight answers to these questions, but that can be an indicator in and of itself. You want to get someone who is honest, forthright, and who has a good success rate. If you get the sense that either the skill or the honesty is lacking, you'd be better off going elsewhere.

You may also want to check what their experience level is. Can you find out how long they've been performing liposuctions? Are they board certified? How long have they had this certification, and has it ever been revoked? Typically, more experience means greater skill, although this is not always the case.

You should also find out more information about what your surgeon's policies are. If your surgery is performed and something goes wrong, do they have a policy on revisions? Would you simply have to pay again, or would they cover some or all of the fee for a revision? What does the office offer with regards to pre- and post-op appointments? You will want to make sure that your surgeon's procedural and financial policies are something that you would be comfortable with.
