What Should Women Wear To A Sales Recruitment Interview?
Time and time again, various studies have shown that a job seeker's appearance can
have an impact on how well they do in their interview and whether or not they are hired. However the "casualization" of dress standards in the workplace makes it especially confusing for women to judge what to wear to an interview.
The issue is complicated further by the fact that, in a sales recruitment interview, you are being judged as to how you will present to your potential employer's customers. Perhaps more than any other type of interview, it is important to convey a professional image in sales roles.
What not to wear
For women, the most important thing to steer clear of is low cut tops and short skirts. You should also avoid tight fitting tops and skirts.
It is not appropriate to show off your sexuality in a sales recruitment interview, because the first thing that will go through an interviewer's mind is: "Is this the image that we want to convey to our customers?" Interestingly, for the actual interview, some of the more conservative employers still expect to see women wearing skirts rather than pants (it is OK to wear pants once you get the job, though!).
A well cut business shirt and a skirt that falls just above or just below the knee are the most appropriate alternatives to the more sexually provocative options in your sales recruitment interview. A general rule of thumb is to stick with well fitted clothes. This does not mean that you should wear baggy clothes.
Even bigger and older women can look good in an outfit that is well cut and tailored, the key being that clothes should be fitted around the waist to produce a slimmer line.
If a jacket you are wearing has buttons, it should be easy for you to do them up - not overly tight or too loose. Shirts that gape or pull between the button holes should never be worn. Shirts, skirts and pants should not be so tight so as to reveal the type or color of your underwear. Whatever you do, avoid the dreaded "visible panty line" (VPL) at all costs.
For those women who are concerned about their body shape and hiding certain 'flaws', there is an abundance of information in books and on the web about how to minimize these flaws, achieved by wearing certain types of clothing to deemphasize them.
What to wear to your sales recruitment interview
For women, a dark grey or navy business suit (with a skirt, not pants) is the best. Avoid black suits, as black has the tendency to be intimidating. A fitted shirt of a light color - white or pale blue, for example - works the best.
To finish off a professional look for your sales recruitment interview, it is recommended that you wear minimal accessories (for example, no chunky earrings) and light make-up. It is advisable to have your hair tide back and off your face.
Some things to avoid include:
* Bright nail polish
* Chipped nails
* Visible tattoos
* Visible body piercings (but conservative earrings are OK)
* Bulky, jingly jewelry
* Cluttered, slouchy handbags (a brief case works better)
* Heavy perfume
* Stiletto heels (conservative court shoes are the best)
These things can distract your interviewer away from what you are saying, at the expense of your presenting well in the sales recruitment interview. Remember, good presentation creates a good first impression and improves your chances of getting hired.
