What Teaching Universities Offer International Students
In many cases, international students decide that they want to study in the United States because of the tremendous amount of resources available to universities. To that end, many of them apply to the largest research universities under the impression that those universities will offer international students more access to resources. This is not always the case. The US is one of the wealthiest nations in the world and, that being the case, even teaching universities in this nation tend to have quite a lot of access to resources. For international students, sometimes teaching universities actually have more of the resources that they need.
At a teaching university, international students will generally be able to access more resources related directly to their education. For example, counselors who help international students with their funding needs, housing needs and with generally getting used to being in the United States will have more time to work with students on an individual basis. In a large research university, it's pretty easy to get lost in the crowd and to end up having a lot of counselors and, yet, to have no counselors available when you really need to talk to one.
As far as resources related to studying go, some of the teaching universities actually provide international students with more access than do the research universities. For example, if you're a science major and you need access to laboratory time, it's usually much easier to get it at a teaching university, as there are fewer people vying for the same time slots. There is also a much better chance that you can work directly with your professor on some projects, which is a huge help when you're trying to learn complex subjects. It also opens up the potential of getting a good reference from your professor for work, since you already spent time working with them.
Teaching universities do not mean that the international students attending them will have less access to resources. In fact, in some cases, it will mean precisely the opposite. If you're considering universities in the United States, make sure that you take a look at the schools in the heartland. Some of these universities provide fine educations, have excellent professors and will provide you with enough access to resources that you'll be able to learn more than you would in an environment where they may not have time for you. When seeking your education, the more help the better!
