What Things Can You Do That Will Help You Quit Smoking
People get started smoking cigarettes for many different reasons
, but they usually continue to smoke for two reasons only, they become addicted to nicotine and the smoking act itself. Once a person has become addicted to nicotine, it is not unlike any other substance that can be addictive. It is not a real drug per say, buy an ingredient that is found in tobacco. It is not nearly always a drug that people can become addicted to, just ask anyone that has a food addiction, an alcohol addiction or an addiction to something like sex.
It is hard to say why it is so difficult for smokers to give up the habit. It really only takes a few days or so to eliminate the actual nicotine from the physical system, but breaking the habit of wanting to light up is an entirely different matter. Even people that have been quit smoking for years report that occasionally they will still experience and overwhelming desire to light up and smoke a cigarette. It just goes to show that old habits do die hard and sometimes it is difficult to keep them dead.
In order to even contemplate quitting smoking you first have to ask yourself why you do it. Most smokers will tell you it is because they enjoy it. But sometimes after a person has been smoking for years, it will be because they can not stop doing it even though they no longer enjoy it. You would think that after you begin to hate something that you do it should be easy to quit doing it, but that does not seem to be the case with smoking tobacco. Perhaps a person that wants to quit must first find something that they enjoy more than smoking or have something in mind that can help take it's place.
It is very hard to do some things and smoke cigarettes at the same time. Something like taking up singing, joining a gym, swimming, joining a sports team, working around children or sick people. There are a number of hobbies or activities that you might like to take up that will not allow you to smoke at the same time. Before you make that first attempt at quitting smoking, it might be a great idea to find several different new things to engage yourself in that can not possibly involve smoking. It might be someplace you go or something you do. Anyone that wants to stop smoking needs to have a very well laid out plan before they begin. You know the cravings, anxiety and even depression are likely to come once you begin eliminating cigarettes, so be prepared in some way for those cravings and other issues before they begin.
