What To Do After A Car Accident
Being prepared for this eventuality means comparing car insurance quotes and choosing the best one
, reading it thoroughly (which, lets face it, not many of us do until after we need it!) and keeping a copy of your policy in your glove box at all times. It also pays to keep a cheap disposable camera and a notepad and pen, so that you can record the details of the damage done, but more on that later! Here are some steps you should take immediately following a motor vehicle accident:
1. Check that everyone in your car (including yourself) is uninjured. Obviously the safety of all parties is the most important concern, and should anyone require medical assistance the very first thing to do is call an ambulance and try to help them as much as possible.
2. If everyone is unharmed, the second thing you should do is take a few moments to calm your breathing and gather your thoughts. Many people experience minor shock after a car accident, and focusing for a moment on slowing your breathing can help you deal with the situation in a more logical way.
3. Now its time to put that notepad and camera to use. Exchange car insurance and registration details with the other driver, trying to stay calm and neutral in your exchange. Emotions will be running high but becoming aggressive or defensive will simply complicate an already difficult situation. If a person is injured, the car needs towing, the other driver fails to stop or exchange details or you suspect they are under the influence, the police need to be called to the scene. You must remain on the scene until after you have spoken to officers and filed a report. If the accident is very minor you still need to report it to the police, but can do so up to twenty-four hours after the event.
4. Call your insurance provider as soon as possible. Dont worry about your premiums going up or your no-claim bonus, it is better to be upfront and let them know exactly what has gone on in case they are required to cover some or all of the other persons costs. Get the names and phone numbers of any passers-by who witnessed the accident, they may provide invaluable evidence should the claim be disputed.
5. If your car is drivable you may still be in a bit of shock. If possible, ask friends or family to come and meet you and drive your car home for you.
