What To Do After A Car Accident

Unfortunately, many people will find themselves in some sort of car accident within their lifetime

, be it big or small. When this occurs, there are a number of things that you should and should not do.

The most important thing that you can do is stay at the scene and leave the vehicle exactly where it is. Very often, when individuals are stressed, worried, or scared after being hit by another car or from accidentally hitting another object, they react by trying to drive to get help.

The best thing for you to do is stay where you are and call for help. Do not leave the scene, because you may ruin evidence or the police will not be able to diagram what happened, because your automobile will not be there or will be in a different spot than where it occurred.

Make sure that the other driver is present, especially if the situation was not your fault. You will need them around to testify their side of the story.

If they drive away, be sure to act quickly and get their license and vehicle information. This is against the law, and the operator of the other car will need to be prosecuted.

You can also be fined or penalized by the police if you leave the scene. Make sure to be cautious and stay as long as you are told, or you could face having your licensed suspended or receiving criminal charges.

If you or any of the members of your party are injured, there are many precautions that you must take. Try and help, only if you are trained to administer first aid assistance.

If not, see if anyone around you is able to. The first thing you should do after an accident is call "9-1-1," especially if there are any injuries, seemingly big or small.

When you call the police, make sure to tell them that people are injured and that an ambulance will be needed right away. If at all possible, guard those that are hurt and use your hazard lights, flashers, or flares to direct traffic away from where you are situated.

Be sure to give the police all information you can about what injuries you or the others have sustained. You may need to hire a personal injury lawyer at a later date, and having this information on record will be very beneficial to your settlement.

Make sure to help the individuals in the other automobile, as well. If you are conscious and able, it is your responsibility to keep the others involved safe and comfortable.

Get medical help right away. Some maladies may not seem too serious, but can develop quickly into life threatening situations.

Another thing that must be taken care of is the receiving of information from the operator of the other automobile. You will need their name, address, driver's license number, insurance information, and license plate number.

You should also obtain personal info from the witness, if there are any. Suitable notes would be their name, address, and telephone number.

Take notes about your surroundings, what you remember of the collision, make note of the officer's and investigator's names and precincts, and find out the incident number. The more things you write down and record about the incident, the site, the people involved, and those that are summoned to help you, the better your case will be if you have to have a lawyer represent you in court and the easier it will be to receive help from insurance companies.

When these situations occur, it is unclear who is at fault. Whatever you do, do not take the blame or admit fault to anything.

You may not be in your right mind or may not have seen or noticed what exactly happened. If you falsely accuse yourself, you may risk litigation from the other party, not receiving help on your insurance, or in some cases you could risk being charged by the officers there.

The most important thing to remember is to keep a clear mind and stay calm, even when you or others are hurt. This will ensure that you can properly help and speak to the police and others involved with a clear mind.
