Flooding is a common problem in the rainy season with many houses being threatened by the rising water levels

. Moreover, a house can also get flooded if the taps are left open or because of a leaking pipe. A house flood can prove to be quite a challenge for a person to contain and can causes massive amount of damage to the house and to the belongings of the house owner, resulting in huge losses. The following are some of the tips that can help a person in containing a house flood and limiting the damage caused by it.

Turn Off Electricity

Before you even think about stepping into the flooded house to find the cause of the flood, turn off the electricity of your house. This is important because wading in the water with the lights still on can result in a catastrophe. Water conducts electricity and if the floodwater has reached the fuse box, it can easily electrocute a person to death who is standing in the water. Therefore, it is compulsory that a person turns off the electric supply to his house before entering into the waterlogged house.

Find Out the Cause

After having ensured your safety by turning off the lights, your next step would be to find out the cause of the flood and to deal with it. If the flood is caused by rain then there is no way to contain it. You can only hope for the rain to stop before you start thinking about pumping the water out. Incase of leaks or overflowing toilets, you can get to the source and stop the water from spilling in to your house by dealing with the problem. If you are unable to locate the leak or the source of the flooding, it is best to call your fire department immediately.

Pump the Water Out

Once the cause for the house flood is identified and dealt with, the next step

would be to pump out the water from your house. This task of extracting the water from the house should be handled carefully. It is best to drain the water out gradually rather than to pump it out at once. The reason for this is that pumping the water out too quickly can cause a pressure difference and can damage the walls of the house and the basement. Therefore, when draining the floodwater, do not get hasty in removing the water instead be methodical and pump the water slowly.

Document the Damage

If you have flood insurance, then you can claim your insurance money for compensating the loss of property or personal belongings you suffered at the hands of the flood. However, in order to do that you should first document the damage caused by the flood and make an estimate of the amount of money that is going to be required for making repairs and restoring the house to its original state. Take pictures of the damaged goods as well to present as proof of the damage to your insurer.

Keeping these tips in mind can help a person in claiming his insurance money so that he can get the flood damage repairs over and done with.
