What To Know Before Building A Shed

Ready to build a shed on your property? It's an ambitious project

, but one that you can accomplish in just a day or 2 if you are willing to take the time to learn how to do it right. And as an added bonus, a properly built shed will probably increase the value of your property.

Before you even begin, you'll need to decide what purpose your shed is going to serve. Will you be using it to house livestock like sheep, horses, or even chickens? Or is it simply going to be used for storage? Or maybe you need a home office, or a workshop to pursue your hobbies? Knowing the use of the shed will help you decide on important issues like where to place it on your property, how big it will be, whether or not it will need windows, and which utilities (water, sewer, electricity) you will need to have installed.

Another important item to consider is the design style and materials used for the shed. You want your shed to complement your property and blend in with your other buildings and landscaping, not be an eyesore. And of course you'll also need to check with your local planning and permits department to see if there are any regulations you must follow and permits and inspections that you must get in order to put a shed on your property.

Once you have taken care of those basic details it's time to choose the type of shed you want and get your building plans so you can get started. If you're a beginner without any specialized construction skills who wants to build the shed yourself, then a lean-to shed is probably the best type of shed for you. A lean-to shed uses the back of your house as one of the walls, which means that it leans on the house. Typically lean-to sheds have two doors which open outward for easy access. Lean-to sheds are perfect for storing tools, equipment and other supplies that just need a dry, secure location.

If you have some building skills or are willing to pay someone to help you with the more difficult steps, you may find that a freestanding hobby shed is perfect for you. A hobby shed should be large enough that you can comfortably spend a significant amount of time there doing whatever activities you are interested in. It is very important that the shed is comfortable to work in, so you will want to install windows and a high roof that allows air to circulate. And of course you will need to run electricity so that you will have light, a place to plug in whatever appliances you use for your hobby, as well as heat and air conditioning if needed.

A livestock shed is similar to a hobby shed, with suitable changes like cement floors and stalls or pens to facilitate cleaning and to comfortably accommodate the animals that will be living in it.

Actually building your shed can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. The basic procedure is to do the foundation first, then the walls and finally the roof. After that you just need to finish it with paint or siding. The easiest and fastest way is to buy a pre-made shed that can quickly be put together on your site in a few hours. However, this is usually the most expensive option and doesn't give you many choices for customizing the shed.

You can also hire a construction team to build your shed. While this does let you have the shed built to your specifications and finished quickly, it is another fairly expensive option. Finally you can build the shed yourself, but before you begin you'll need to make sure that you have read the plans carefully and that you understand them and are capable of following the instructions. You'll also need get all of the tools and materials you need and have them on-site before you begin doing any work. Getting all your tools and materials together in one location will save you a lot of time because you won't be constantly stopping work in order to look for your supplies and tools.
