, washer or dryer is a major decision. Comparison-shopping is a must, so that you don't end up paying more than you have to. On the other hand, don't sacrifice safety, convenience and reliability just to save some dollars.

Consider first what features you need as well as the size and capacity that your home can accommodate. A refrigerator with an ice maker or reversible door, a washer or dryer with sensors for blocked lint filters and humidity changes - these are great to have, but do you really need those features? Remember that the price goes higher as you go up a model and more features are added.

There is nothing worse than finding out that you need to go back to the store and pay extra to have a wrong purchase replaced. This is because you did not measure the space where the appliance will be placed or you had incorrect measurements. Whether it's the dimensions of the cabinet that will house your washer dryer, or the space between the countertop and the wall for your refrigerator, the smart thing to do is to measure before going to the store and buying an appliance.

Capacity is another thing you need to decide on. What kind of use will the appliance get? A couple with no children will need a different size of appliance from a growing family. The energy cost and efficiency of an appliance are also tied up with the capacity.

For instance, getting a refrigerator that is too big or too small wastes energy and effort on your part. Not being able to keep it filled and wasted space is just as bad as having to keep rearranging things to make them fit the limited space. On the other hand, a dryer should have twice the capacity of the matching washer so that you don't have to split a single load of wash into several batches when it is time to dry the clothes.

Everybody wants an appliance that is easy to use and maintain. You can decide if this is the case with the appliance that you are getting when you read the manual. This should be available from floor models, and will tell you how the appliance should be operated and cared for. Ask if there is an authorized factory service that is available for your brand in your area.

All appliances come with a warranty, and it is important to read and understand this before making a commitment. The coverage can include the whole appliance or just certain parts, and some even include the cost of labor. The period covered by the warranty also varies by brand or model.

It also helps to ask your dealer about promotions or discounts. Buying a washer dryer combo of the same brand might be less expensive than if you bought them separately or if you bought different brands. Sometimes, appliances bought online come with mail-in rebates that gives you bigger savings than if you purchased them at a store.
