What You Should Know About Aluminum Alloys
You have undoubtedly heard of aluminium metal but are you familiar with aluminium alloys
? It is actually a mixture of different compounds where aluminium is the predominant metal. You may have not noticed it but there are a lot of products right now that use aluminium alloys as their primary component.
Most of these aluminium alloy products are usually used in cases where the risk of corrosion is present or there is the need to maintain a specific weight level. This is because aluminium alloys are generally perceived to be corrosion resistant and is light compared to other metals with the same structural composition.
Among the notable things about aluminium alloy is its conductivity. In fact, some aluminium alloy compositions have become a sensible alternative to copper when it comes down to electrical applications. This is why almost all of the high voltage power lines utilize aluminium alloy as conductor on weight grounds. Although they may have lower conductivity than copper, they are very dense, which enables them to handle more than twice the volume of electricity compared to copper.
Some aluminium alloy compositions are also perfect for particular portions of modern aircraft frames. Although there is a growing move among aircraft manufacturers to shift to titanium and other composites, aluminium alloy is still very much in use. Aside from its lightweight property, which is very important in the aircraft industry,
aluminium alloys can be easily fabricated.
One thing about some
aluminium alloys though is that while they may have the ability to maintain a shiny appearance on their surfaces in a dry environment, galvanic corrosions may occur if it is placed in electrical contact with other metal, particularly those that have more negative corrosion potentials. This is why particular types of aluminium alloys are extensively used in some batteries to generate a voltage.
There are also other metal compounds that can be blended with aluminium to create another type of product. One of these is the
aluminium bronze where the main alloying metal is again aluminium which is added to copper. These types of aluminium compositions are used for variety of purposes like gears, aircraft parts, and other mechanisms that require great strength and resistance to corrosion.
