What's new in blood glucose testing?

If you suffer from diabetes, your quality of life directly depends on how you control your blood sugar levels. By monitoring your blood glucose levels regularly, you can take direct control of your health and manage diabetes effectively.

As you know, the main goal of diabetic treatment is to keep blood sugar levels under control. To achieve this, doctors recommend medication, changes in food habits and regular exercise. However, due to several factors, diabetics often find that their blood glucose levels fluctuate a lot. Therefore, to keep diabetes under control, it is important to go in for blood glucose testing. Diabetics need to check their blood for excess sugar (hyperglycemia) and low sugar (hypoglycemia). Both of these conditions are dangerous. So, most patients are asked to monitor their blood glucose levels at least once every day.

Fortunately, unlike in the past, blood glucose testing techniques have become much easier today. Innovative technologies make it possible for patients to monitor their blood glucose levels at home. In the past, patients had to visit a laboratory where blood would be drawn by a technician. The blood is then sent for analysis. These days, however, you have blood glucose testing kits that make it possible for you to prick your finger with a lancing device, apply a drop of blood on a strip and insert the strip into the calibrator for a reading. Your blood glucose levels then appear on the monitor!

Different manufacturers use different technologies for blood glucose testing. Some of the most common technologies used for blood glucose testing include:

* Blood glucose meters: In this electronic device, blood is placed on a strip that is then interfaced with a digital meter. The digital display shows the blood glucose levels within seconds. The test strips are disposable. The advantage of a blood glucose meter is that it requires only a small drop of blood. You can draw blood from less painful areas. Some systems allow multiple testing strips. So, the user does not have to use fresh strips every time blood is tested. Latest meters even allow you to download information to your computer, making it easy for you to evaluate your blood glucose levels over long periods of time.

* Continuous blood glucose monitors: Here, a disposable sensor is placed under the skin and a pager-like device displays blood glucose levels at all times. This system is beneficial for patients who have been suffering from diabetes for a long time and are prone to have significant variations throughout the day.

* Non-invasive blood glucose testing: Non-invasive technologies allow testing blood without pricking the skin. These include ultrasound and IR detection. However, most of these systems are under development.

Continual blood glucose testing is vital because the information it provides is both useful and motivational. It can help patients and doctors identify the right kind of medication. It also helps patients make changes to their diet and lifestyle to achieve maximum blood sugar control.
