What are the Most Common Causes of Acne?
Acne is basically a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit. This pilosebaceous unit is made up of three main parts, mainly the hair follicle, the sebaceous gland, and the hair.
These are scattered all over the body, except in the palms, soles, top of the feet, and the lower lip. On the other hand, pilosebaceous units have the densest population on a person's face, upper neck, and chest. The sebaceous glands produce a sebum, a substance that keeps the hair and the skin moisturized. During a person's adolescent years, sebaceous glands enlarge and produce more sebum. Typically, at around the age of 20, the production of sebum decreases.
Sebum, and the overproduction of it is one of the causes of acne, although it is not the only factor.
Bacteria that feeds on the sebum also comes into play as one of the causes of acne.
Propionibacterium acnes is a bacteria that feeds on the sebum. As such, the amount of this in the follicles increases during puberty when there is a lot of oil production. The bacteria also attracts white blood cells towards the follicle, and because of the enzyme that they produce, they damage the walls of the follicle. This then lets the contents of the follicle enter the dermis. This is what it causes the inflamed lesions such as papules, pustules, and nodules to appear on one's skin. Also, the bacteria is known to cause the formation of another irritant, free fatty acids, that can increase the inflammation in the follicle.
Another one of the most common causes of acne is when the sebum gets trapped in the hair follicle. When hair follicles are obstructed, the sebum that is produced gets trapped and block or plug the follicle. This process called comedogenesis, produces a type of acne called comedones or what we typically call whiteheads and blackheads.
