It can all start by having simple meetings with the staff on a weekly basis. From there, everybody should share their thoughts on how they have taken care of themselves for the past week. Why is this necessary? This is the best way for these people to gauge whether they can serve the needs of others or not.
Some suggested CSBs for addiction counselors
The CSB suggests that a substance abuse counselor should celebrate even the smallest victories he experiences in life. In addition, he should form a group that will be interesting not only for him but one that will favor his clients as well. As much as possible he should also have time for himself, perhaps spend a quiet time with all his doors shut. This can provide room for reflection especially when he feels that improvement is needed. Furthermore, he must give himself time to explore his surroundings, meaning he should not limit himself to the confines of his office.
There should also be instances when he must learn how to say "no". He must also organize everything especially his paperwork. It is also vital to get into shape and do some routines from yoga and biking to swimming and stretching. He must also have time to enjoy things that he loves to do like fishing with his kids or making scrapbooks.
Relaxation is also important as per suggestion by CSB. Taking naps, praying and scheduling breaks with clients are important. Relaxing, for an addiction counselor, may also mean, setting boundaries between the client and that of the expert. If there are any excruciating tasks in the office, it is also high time for the substance abuse counselor to listen to good music.
Why is CSB important in the lives of addiction counselors?
Looking back at all the suggested CSBs mentioned above, one can look back to how stressful the life of an addiction counselor can be. With CSB, burnout among counselors can be prevented. As a result, the most distressing situations in the life of a professional can also be avoided. There will be no more loneliness or upset or decreased self-esteem. Goodbye to emotional exhaustion and depression as well.
Like any ordinary people, addiction counselors experience physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual harm when they are burdened by their work. When they cannot fight all of these stressors, there is a great tendency they will not be able to prove how effective they are in their chosen field. Add to that, alcohol and drug addicts are the most difficult people they will ever deal with. Without CSB for addiction counselors, these professionals may not be able to cope up with the pressure.
