What is Coaching?

This question comes up a lot when people are seeking answers

, help and hope, but they aren't sure how coaching might work for them. Generally speaking, if you feel "stuck" in the same place, keep trying the same things over and over, and cannot reach the goals you struggle to achieve, you are probably a good candidate. Coaching is designed expressly to give you more of what you want: deeper love, greater happiness, increased wealth, stronger health, and much more meaning to your life. Here are some thoughts to consider:

Coaching is a shape-shifter

Whatever shape you're in when you enter coachingit's going to shift and change. Physically, emotionally, mentally, financiallyall parts of your life are going to be toned, buffed, enriched, and expanded beyond what you could have imagined. Coaching keeps the focus on the positive qualities and talents you possess and how you can use them to further your goals. Coaching gives you the opportunity to consider new perspectiveswhich in turn, lead to new behaviors that bring new results. The slightest shifts in how you view yourself can have profound effects. And lest you think that what you do in life doesn't matterthink of the sand hill and the outcome of moving just one grain of sand. However imperceptible it may seem, every grain within the mound is rearranged. You are shifting into the shape you have always wanted to be inbut didn't know how to accomplish by yourself.

Coaching is not therapy


Butit is highly therapeutic. How are they different from each other? Basically, therapy tends to help you look back at your life to remove blocks that may be impeding your success. Coaching tends to look forward to the goals you want to realize and sets you in motion through an action plan you devise with your coach. Rather than thinking of yourself as "broken" and "needing to be fixed," coaching helps you reframe your experience, hone your strengths, and reclaim the heartfelt intentions you started out with in life to do your best and be your best but somehow got sidetracked. You decide what steps you can take to get to where you want to go, and then you make agreements with your coach around when you will do it. Action breaks up stagnation. It restores hope and energy.

Coaching is a journey

Imagine getting in your car, driving to a destination, but without a GPS or even a map. In coaching, you are in the driver's seat and your coach is on the passenger side, acting as your personal guide, GPS, cheerleader, and sage adviser. Think of this personal journey as being more than just arriving at a destination. You have a coach to help you notice the scenery, the danger signals, the smallest things (which are always the most important things,) the way you make decisions, the consequences of your choices. You learn the art of becoming skilled and adept at driving your life, while enjoying the journey itself. You might even decide that you want to change your original destinationbecause you may discover along the way that you want something different from what you thought you wanted. Coaches and GPS systems have no problem rerouting the driver. On occasion, you may need to back up and look in the rear view mirror while you're doing itif you find an obstacle you need to work your way around. When that happens, there are processes to give you tools, insight, and even more initiative for the trip. As the driver, you will be moving into the new speed of your life.

Coaching is like finding hidden treasure

You are the greatest hidden treasure you will ever search for. You have talents, experiences, knowledge, skills, and a thousand other assets that lie dormant, unused, unacknowledged, and beneath the surface where you may not be able to see them. Think of the tip of the iceberg. What lies beneath the surface of that tip is a mountain hidden in the waterand that mountain represents the great store of power, majesty, and unseen beauty you have waiting to be found. With a sure-footed guide, you set out on a treasure hunt to discover and develop your vast unclaimed resources.

Coaching is an alignment experience.

Are you happy with your life? Are you feeling good about yourself? Does your life flow with purpose, joy, and the energy of looking forward to each day? The degree to which you feel bad is the degree to which you are out of alignment. Think of your life as your spine. The slightest misalignment will give you pain and discomfort. It will constantly nag at you and not leave you alone. It keeps you from being fully engaged and present in everything you do because your misalignment is a distraction, an irritant, and a constant reminder that something is "out." (And, of course, a great deal of misalignment can render you totally unable to function.) Coaching helps you strengthen your spine by exercising the muscles of your values, purpose, focus, determination, andunclaimed dreams. Coaching keeps your back straight.


Ultimately, it's difficult to say specifically what coaching is all about because it's all about the individual. Without question, each journey is uniquejust as each person is.
