Twitter is a micro-blogging platform and it is super important because people use this platform to share information and have discussions. Using Twitter saves people time from lengthy Google searches, from checking lots of review sites... they simply get short and simple answers to their questions in seconds.

It is possible to share a ton of information in just 140 characters (letters and numbers) using Twitter. It's not about sharing links or getting lots of views, it is about getting real time results. For example, you can talk about a sports game happening right now or Apple's latest product launch.

This is such a powerful research tool because you do not have to go to the local Chamber of Commerce, leave the house or even open up a new computer window to find out anything. You can recommend items occasionally for others and they can recommend them for you.

You would be surprised at how much people can cram into 140 characters. For example, here are a couple of Tweets I found at random:

"The Apple Tablet Will Be Unveiled Tomorrow And We Know Nothing (with a link)"

"Haiti oprhans may get break from U.S.- Dozens of lawmakers support legislation that would set up a more streamlined. (with a link)"

"Google Voice Does An End Run Around Apple And Shows Up In The iPhone's Browser (Screenshots)" with a link"

Do you see a common trend in all those posts I showed you? They all linked to an interesting article or blog post, but gave you lots more information than a simple hyperlink.

Getting a Twitter account for yourself is very easy. All you have to do is go to Twitter.com and click the "Sign up now" link. It will ask for you to pick a username, and provide your real name, email address and password. That is it! That easier than getting a new e-mail account.

Once you've completed that step, it's time to make your first tweet. Login, and it will ask you a question such as, "What's happening?" And you simply answer with what you're browsing, where you are right now, and so on.

The final step in getting this setup is to add it to your cell phone. You can text message updates and even receive new replies from others right on your phone... forwarded from Twitter to you in a text message.

You might at some point lose your password to Twitter. If that happens, you can use the "forgot your password" or even "forgot your username" tool. There might be other screens and links on your Twitter account right now, but you can ignore those for the moment. Just get in the habit of updating your Twitter account regularly.
