. The organization that most turn to is the Green Seal. The
Green Seal is an independent, non-profit organization that is dedicated to the protection of the environment and human health as well as transforming the market by promoting the manufacturing, purchasing, and use of environmentally responsible products and services. The Green Seal uses science-based certification standards that are both credible and transparent. Their industry knowledge and standards have allowed for environmentally responsible choices to be made for positive business behaviors and a better quality of life. The first certification with the Green Seal was in 1992. Since then, many businesses, universities, government agencies, and other institutions have benefitted from the Green Seal.
The goal of the Green Seal standards is to identify sustainable leadership performance levels and practices for products and services. These products and services can be cleaning products as well as office supplies, construction supplies, and vehicles. This process is based on the International Organization for Standardization (
ISO) standards. Products or services are evaluated using a life-cycle approach to ensure all possible environmental impacts are considered in the development of a standard, from raw materials through manufacturing to use and disposal. The evaluations done are thorough using state-of-the art scientific evaluations that are used globally.
The Green Seal criteria in section GS-8 for household cleaners is rather extensive, but can be summed up in a few ways. A product must be easy to use in most household conditions, such as not requiring water at special temperatures in order to use. The performance is also measured in that the product must clean as well as or better than nationally recognized products. The safety of the product is strictly tested in that the undiluted or diluted products cannot be corrosive or cause any injury as well as harbor any toxins that are harmful to human or any other life forms. The environmental aspects of course are strict as well. Products must be biodegradable in water, compostable, and not create air pollution. Some things such as phosphorous are used very minimally with their known impacts on water supplies. Certain agents never be used such as heavy metals. The Green Seal also requires and discourages any use of perfumes or animal testing, so consumers are completely aware of the product from all of its stages of manufacturing. Labeling and packaging are also required so that consumers are aware of all content and can dispense of the products wisely.
There are a few household cleaners that are already listed for earning the Green Seal. There are a total of 11 manufacturers who have earned this so far. Among them are names that are easily recognizable such as Office Depot, Ace Hardware, and Simple Green. Products can be looked up on the Green Seal website at www.greenseal.org. Several stores and supermarkets are carrying more of these cleaners all the time. They are usually found in the natural section of the supermarket and sometimes with other cleaners.
The Green Seal is increasing the numbers of products that can be used in any home. The website has new standards developing for more products and listing more each year. This is just one of the many ways to support the
Earth and live well.
