What is the history of viagra?
In the history of medicine, there are many instances when the emergence of surprising discoveries was the result of random observations or findings. Two of the most striking example so far - the discovery of X-ray radiation and antibiotics.
In 1895 German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen noticed strange green glow in the dark from objects that had been before for a short period of time near working high-voltage cathode-ray tube. He also paid attention to a light-striking of photographic film, which had also been located near the high-worked tube. These unexpected observations have allowed the great physicist to suggest the presence of radiation, which was not previously known to mankind. In the future, as we know, this bold assumption was fully confirmed by other scientists.
The history of the discovery of antibiotics looks like a sequence of even more amazing coincidences! In 1928 a British researcher Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered that some dirty mold has destroyed almost all kinds of bacteria, which he had cultivated for bacteriological experiments. However, instead of sterilization of the laboratory dishes, Fleming carefully studied the properties of a dirty mold and as we know it is now called "Penicillin". Hereupon antibiotics were discovered, which made a great revolution in medicine.
Opening of "Viagra" was, apparently, the third great "accidental" discovery in medicine. This is proved by the fact that all the discoveries that have been mentioned above, were awarded the Nobel Prize. The researchers who discovered the properties of the drug "Viagra" have been awarded with the same high award in autumn of 1998th.
The history of "Viagra" has started in 1992 in the UK, in a place Pfayzers Sandwich, in the course of pharmaceutical research of firm, Pfizer was its name. The researchers carried out clinical trials of a new drug - sildenafil citrate, which was aimed to treat certain heart diseases. Scientists have prognosticated that sildenafil citrate will increase the blood flow of the heart muscle and lower blood pressure. However, it was observed that sildenafil citrate does not significantly influence neither the blood circulation in the heart muscle (myocardium) nor blood pressure. But it was revealed simultaneously that many male patients who participated in the study refused to return the tablets of sildenafil, despite the end of testing(!). As it turned out the reason for their refuse to return viagra was only one - all of them noted the dramatic improvement of their erections. Thus, despite the minimal impact on blood circulation in the myocardium, sildenafil caused a significant blood flow to male genitals.
The researchers of pharmaceutical company Pfizer reacted to this unexpected property of sildenafil citrate with proper diligence and recognized a powerful tool in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The new drug was called "Viagra" - the name was born as a result of the merger of words Vigor (power, energy, force) and the Niagara - the most powerful waterfall in North America.
Since 1993, long-lasting clinical trials have demonstrated therapeutic properties of "Viagra". These tests proved the high effectiveness of "Viagra" for impotence treatment and confirmed a high safety of this drug. And as a logical final - on March 27, 1998 the Department of Food and Drug Administration (USA) has approved the use of "Viagra".
Did Pfizer institute a lawsuit against anybody?
- Yes, the company won some lawsuits against two companies that sold products under the name Vaegra and Viagro. These counterfeits were sold for the same price as the real "Viagra".
