What is the secret behind the success of House
?
When English comedian Hugh Laurie announced that he would be taking the lead role in Fox's drama House', it was met with huge surprise on both sides of the Atlantic. Beating several other hopefuls to become Dr Gregory House in the hospital medical drama meant Laurie would not only have to make the step up from small bit-part acting to become a prime-time leading man, but it meant he would have to master a convincing and consistent American accent. Not easy for a man most famous for playing the gormless half of Oxford's finest comedic duo, Fry and Laurie.
Debuting in 2004, Hugh Laurie famously got the part by submitting his audition tape directly to the show's creator David Shore, whilst he was filming in Namibia, beating several American actors to the job. After originally thinking that Dr House was little more than a regularly occurring role in the show, Laurie was apparently as surprised as anyone when he found out he had only read part of the script and, in fact, the whole show is centred around his part.
Despite an unconventional start, House has gone on to become an international television sensation, reenergising the tired medical serial format and bringing hospital dramas into the 21st century. Part of the show's success though comes down to House's unconventional approach to diagnostics, which frequently lands him in hot water with his boss, and later girlfriend, Dr Lisa Cuddy. Thanks to his obsession with obscure and subtle details that most of his team miss, House is portrayed as a troubled medical evangelist and, thanks to some clever plotlines and scripting, very much a modern day Sherlock Holmes. Sharing Holmes' refusal to even consider boring' cases and his omnipresent detachment from his subjects, House has deliberately managed to include several small nods towards the Conan Doyle character, like giving Dr House the house number 221B, for example.
Combing often dark and mysterious plotlines with House's deadpan and dry dialogue, made all the better for Laurie's comedic timing, House has managed to remain in the top ten rated television shows worldwide from its second to its fourth season and, in 2008, was the most watched TV show in the world. Distributed across more than 65 countries, the show has been received well by all of the big TV awards too, including two Golden Globes, a Peabody Award and four Emmys. Of course, the increase in digital TV channels and HD packages through the likes of Sky.com has meant far greater exposure for the show too.
Apparently Shore, the show's creator, was largely inspired by CSI and realised that previous medical programs like ER and Grey's Anatomy were both missing that gritty and surprising element which made CSI so successful. So taking that format, adding a little humour and focusing the story lines on character assessment, rather than medical cases, House was eventually green-lit by Fox. Originally the show was to focus on a crack team' of doctors who between them could diagnose the undiagnosable but, after the pilot episode, it was clear that Dr House would be the real star of the show. Incidentally, the pilot was named Everybody Lies' and, through the seasons, this has become something of a catchphrase for Dr House - meaning everybody lies, but medicine doesn't.
