, called a cut gem, naturally only the best part of the stone is used, hence the price is high. Cutting away parts of the stone usually "included" (foreign matter included in the stone which shows as marks, bubbles etc), leaving leftover stone for dust, until recently. As the hobbyist market grew, gem traders realised there was a huge market with a keen desire to get their hands on gemstones at a more realistic price.

Beads have been used to produce jewellery since Byzantine times and indeed there are wonderful example works of handmade jewellery all over the world by Egyptians, Greeks, etc and more recently American Indians, with the use of stunning turquoise. So it was only a matter of time that the Hobbyist market would set their eyes on gemstone beads. Whilst designers have seen a dramatic increase in the availability of gemstone beads over the last 10 years, the industry has been over populated with Hobbyist makers, thereby slightly tarnished the use of gemstones in handmade jewellery as a less than precious material. Eager to keep contemporary jewellery designers happy, gemstone traders have now tackled this situation by introducing higher quality gemstones with higher quality cuts and technical shapes, detaching itself slightly from the hobbyist market. There is now a small minority of gemstone jewellery makers who have bridged the gap between fine jewellery and hobbyist style jewellery offering handmade jewellery, contemporary jewellery, designer jewellery or fashion jewellery.

Lets not forget that whichever gemstone you choose, they are precious and a rare commodity. Some of the Turquoise mines in Arizona, for example, have almost dried up, like Kingman, making that particular gemstone highly collectable and sort-after in handmade jewellery. It's certainly worth being selective when purchasing gemstones, scrutinising where your gemstone jewellery originates may mean the difference between just a jewellery statement and an investment.

Black diamonds have received some attention lately especially with trendy design houses like the Boucheron and uber chic London jewellery boutiques setting the new black diamond trend. Yet the market has virtually not even seen the grey, yellow, green and brown coloured diamonds which are destined to be the next best thing. The same applies to diamond beads as to the making of Gemstones beads, whereby supplier's now use off-cuts from cut diamond grade stones and used these lesser quality diamond off cuts, usually included, and make them into beads for threading, now a new and exciting trend in contemporary jewellery. Whilst the prices are a little out the league of Hobbyists, they are being snapped up by handmade jewellery designers and are often found around the necks of famous Celebrities. They are usually found in understated designs, so that only those "in the know", know what they are, so are often overlooked by the Press! They are usually always cut into tiny beads of approx 1mm and are not high quality faceted as a cut diamond to keep prices low. The holes are also extremely small, usually .3mm so reduce the waste as they are sold by weight, which would imply that usually only highly skilled workers can transform them into wearable handmade jewellery creations. Whilst black diamonds may not have the translucence, they still have the sparkle known as fire. And with the trend of blackened jewellery, we are certainly bound to see more black diamonds on the market following in the trend of black is indeed once again, the new black!
